Who likes GECs? Let's see 'em!

Well, don't let anyone say I don't do things to excess.

A picture of the stag knives.

Knife Rehab, you may not have enough money left to pay attention

I'm not sure how GEC is making it in these tough times but I'm doing my part!! I love these big boys. They look so good I just cant bring myself to use them!

What a terrific thread. kick my ass into gear ! i have 3 GEC knives which is about 0.1% of my collection, so they are terribly under represented and i obviously need more ! but before i go shopping i want to understand the branding better. some are branded Northfield, others Tidioute and some GEC.
is there a rational behind which of these 3 names is given to a particular knife or pattern ?
the 3 i have are all Northfield: #73, stag 2006; #53M Horsecut Walnut(?) bone 2007; #12 Blood Red jigged bone 2009.
any help understanding the branding of these great GEC knives will be much appreciated.
thanks, roland

Roland, GEC is the generic term for the whole company, Tidioute and Northfield are the carbon knives with different shields&handle materials (Northfield often has swedging too)
Great Eastern are the stainless version and have a squirrel&acorns blade etch. Each marque has its own tube and labels too.

These are some great looking knives!

Thanks Willgoy; i had wondered if "Northfield" and "Tidioute" knives were based on patterns made by the original companies of these names. but as you didn't mention it, i now assume not.

Thanks everyone for sharing.

I only have two a #73 jack in burnt arrowhead bone and a #54 whittler pattern in the best stag I've ever had the pleasure of handling.

My grail knife is fast becoming a GEC #23 Northfield pioneer in burnt stag.

You guys are such bad influences :o
I just pulled the trigger on one of these barehead trapper knives ,the 3-3/4" one,in stag & carbon
As you can see by my description,I can't keep up with all the different models:confused:

Quote Vince: "You guys are such bad influences"
yep, me too, buying more already and i just saw this thread for the first time 2 hours ago !
But(as i often need to justify selling the farm(i.e. LOC is backed by my 90 acres), GEC is doing the best job of building fine Traditional patterns up to the very high standards of "old USA", like Ulster Knife Co., Miller Bros, Schrade Cut Co. and others.
i think it is very important that the tradition of making really well built, attractive folders, be maintained in the USA.

Northfield - Carbon steel, usually highly polished blade, sweged, stag or other premium materials, Unxld or Northfield shield, may have extra bolster details.

Tidioute - Carbon Steel, usually less polished blade (matte), no swedge, no stag (bone, wood, acrylic), various shields, plain bolsters.

Great Eastern - Stainless Steel, polished, no swedge, typically natural handles (elk, bone, stag, wood, some micarta and casien), acorn shield, plain bolsters.

Anything else?

Thanks for this sum - up
Would you say the Northfield is a more "top of the line" line up ?
TIA,
-Vince

IMO Northfield would look like GEC's top of the line knife, due to the extra care taken with swedges on the blades, giving them a more superior look to the GEC and Tidioute's.

The "natural" stag linerlock came with the shield as a separate item to have and to hold.

Thanks for those pics.
"the shield as a separate item to have and to hold" meaning it fell off ? glued not pinned ? if so, that's not up to scratch. knife like this should have a pinned shield.
