"the shield as a separate item to have and to hold" meaning it fell off ? glued not pinned ? if so, that's not up to scratch. knife like this should have a pinned shield.

No, the Genuine Stag (non burnt, as opposed to Burnt Stag) GEC knives do not have a shield attached. The shield is put in the knife tube with a clasp, so you can use it as a pin.
