Who Makes Bushcraft Knives???

Check out Koyote (he has a subforum in the maker's area). You already know Andy (Fiddleback). JK knives (Stomper), Bryan Breeden, DP-knives, Daniel Koster (also has a sub-forum in the makers section), ML-knives. I also suggest try posting a similar thread to this in W&SS.

Good luck.

This Shop Talk forum is for knifemakers to discuss their craft. I'm going to move this discussion to Wilderness & Survival Skills, where this question has been a regular topic.

It's probably too late to help the original poster, since jtypo resurrected a year-old thread. But since others have joined in ... off we go.

jtypo, welcome to Bladeforums.

Please take the time to read the FAQ and look through the announcements and stickies of the different forums you browse here.

You resurrected a thread from over a year ago, so the advice you gave wasn't of much use to the original poster, and wasn't really what he was asking about, and consequently, looked like spam.

I have added two Skookum Bush Tool derivatives to my set......

Schwert! They don't have a "smiley" to indicate just how tickled I am to see you posting on WSS. Maybe I have missed your posts in the past but I hope to see more of you here.

I agree that it's hard to NOT find what you want with all the makers who are willing to accomodate our needs and desires, but I also appreciate a fella's desire for adherance to a specific "pattern." I tend to wander around a bit myself in terms of blade shapes, handle types and such and have only stayed true to the general dimensions. The "Bushcraft," as has come to be recognized in form really is an attractive knife though and does have a lot of functinal versatility. The closest thing I have in this general "form" is from Muskrat Man, but he is temporarily out of commission due to a hand injury.

Muskrat Man, Fiddleback and Breeden and three of my most-used knives. There are more, to include a Gossman, Matt L., a Shing, which is of the "correct" pattern, but is still waiting for handles and was surprisingly inexpensive.

If by bushcraft, you mean woodlore, than you need to find a maker that creates a knife similar to the specs of the original Ray Mears design. I own a SWC (Steven Wade Cox) model in 01 that is a faithful rendition. It is nicely finished and is identical in every respect.

That being said, you can't go wrong with BRKT, Koster or Charlie May. All make nice scandi style blades (Aurora, Bushcraft and Skifa Scandi.) You just need to narrow down what you want. BTW, BRKT does not use the same stock for big and small knives. They vary in thicknesses and stating otherwise is untrue. Check out www.brkca.com for all the specs and you'll see what I mean.

Last but not least, here are few pictures of some Bushcraft knives I own that will give you an idea of the designs.

From looking around at custom knives, I've been eying one from Koster. Very sleek, with an almost modern look, but still holding the classic look. Ive been wanting to pick one up, but its just not gonna happen for a while.

Thats where my vote goes anyways.

Agreed. I can speak for Koyote, Stomper, DP, and ML Knives. Excellent choices all the way around. Hopefully soon I'll be able to say the same for Andy, Bryan, and Daniel's blades.

Here is Stomper's Bushcrafter Knife. This one belongs to a certian friend traveling down under at the moment, but I'm lucky enough to be babysitting it while he is gone. This one is 4" blade 4.25" handle, John can easily make it to your specs. It is an AWESOME knife! If you like it check out his website for more pics of that model.

+1 on the Koster. I've got one of the Bushcraft models and it's never off my belt when I go into the woods or when i'm on the building site.

Take at look at the "Bushcrafter" by BHK (Blind Horse Knives). I just received mine, and while I have only taken it through a small set of tasks (preparing lunch, making fuzz sticks, batoning, and striking the spine on a firesteel), it is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Best of all, the price won't break your back.

Here is a dumb question, and I am full of them.......

Why are we recommending knives to someone who asked about it a year ago and probably has no clue this thread has been resurrected?

Probally because non of us are smart enough to look at the date.:o I would still buy a Koster;)

His Bushcrafter looks great - I'd like to get one at some point. They are spoken of very highly around here, and are a fraction of the cost of a Skookum.

$200 for a Skookum and that includes the sheath and postage.

$180 for a Koster incl sheath and postage.

You get a bit more expensive steel in the Koster for 20 dollars less.

You get a steel butt cap you can hammer with and a bit better design in the Skookum IMO.

I like the sheath a bit better on the Koster.
