Who makes great sub-hilts?

Yeah, I keep telling myself "get one in tool steel or stainless" and then I see this:

and think maybe damascus will be okay if I'm really careful with it :D

Bruce Bump (MS) made one that's on Blade Gallery. A little different, but really nice, plus, with the diff-tempered forged carbon steel blade, should be tough too.

Robert Hajovsky made a nice subhilt, though he passed away several years back. :(

Great sub-hilts, guys. Michael that is a great collection of Bob's knives. Here's one from one of the top folder makers, a rare fixed blade. W.D. Pease.

The picture was taken by Bob Doggett.

Those are some mighty fine subhilts guys. For what Its worth I specialize in subhilt fighters. I have Bob Loveless's express permision to make them, and they have passed Bobs very critical eye. Being here at Ft. Hood, the worlds largest military base, we take fighters very seriously. Bob has grasiously given me excluseve permission To also use a modified version of the Naked Logo which is shure to be a hit with the colectors. All of my fighters are avaliable with a unique beal blast for subdued reflection, as required for combat operations at a lesser cost. Can be reached at 254-554-0956 E-mail mspurgeonlovet@wm.connect.com Thanks mlovett-subhilt8

 I'd check out mlovett. Any pictures?

Several very good recommendations. Les Robertson always has outstanding subhilts, and R Doucette's work is an excellent value.

Personally, if you find any of Wally Hayes' subhilts around, buy it. They are very high on my list [and regrets for not buying when I could]

Rod Chappel, Pat Crawford, George Herron, William "Gordon" Defreest, Bill Luckett, and John Young all make fine subhilts. The Chappel and Herron pieces you will find will mostly be over $1,000. The others probably should not. Some of the makers are not currently producing subhilts, but the names I have mentioned, I have seen on the aftermarket recently, so they should be available.

Did you mention that you "used" a subhilt knife daily? May I ask what you do with it?

The dallas airport was nice enough to fry my digital while on my way to the west coast blade show, and Loveless's shop. Trying to get a new one. I have hard copy pic's here at the office. I will be happy to send copies out to who ever is interested. I just joined blade forums, still need to figure out how to post pic's. Will also e-mail. mspurgeonlovet@wmconnect.com send me a line.

Robert Crowder kinda' knows what he is doing too. You be the judge.

Okay, I'm sure a lot of fine knifemakers make a subhilt.
I've been browsing and I see a lot of art subhilts that are very beautiful.
I'm looking for a good-looking user that can be relied on. I know the subhilt is typically thought of as a fighting knife, but they make great users (if you need a large knife) because of the control.
Collectors, who makes a strong, reliable (and purty, in that order) subhilt? :D
I specalize in subhilt and non subhilt fighters, combat and tactical,I work in ghe Loveless style by Bob approval. Avaliavle in full mirrow, two tone and unique bead blast finishes for combat use. michaellovett@earthlink.net 2545540956

Here's an early piece I have from Lamont Coombs - one of only 2 stock removal pieces I have kept I like it that much - poor photo, but you can get the overall impression from it.

:) Look at a DeLeon sub-hilt. I have a couple and like them. I think DeLeon only sells through treemanknives.com nowadays.

Les Robertson has a New Lovett Sub Hilt on his sight, Thanks M. Lovett robertsoncustomcutlery.com

Hi Mike,

I saw that knife in New York on Saturday, beautiful. I believe it sold Friday, as he was taking orders off of it.

Great to hear! Wish I could have been there with the knife. Les is great to do buisness with. Kit, turned me on to him, Next show for me. Ft Worth mid. April.. M. Lovett

He is just starting to make knives again. I handled a few that he made when I was @ Louis Chow's table in Pasadena. Lovett is currently making a "Loveless" style subhilt better than Loveless. It's true!!

Loveless authorized Mike to use his "naked lady" logo with a few small mods. Mike is starting to get booked up with orders, but, IMHO, if you want an "authentic" subhilt and don't want to pay well over $1,000 to get it, or wait 5 years, Lovett's your man.
