Not to overly stick up for Mike on this one, Anthony, but I'm pretty sure that was a commissioned piece.

I cannot see Mike electing to produce a pearlex and brass knife of his own free volition.

RW had nothing but good things to say about Mike when I chatted with him at the AKI

Best Regards,

:barf: That's for sure!!! I'v been making Custom Knives for over 30 years now. One of the truth's of being a Custom maker is having to from time to time make a Custom knife. In other words what the customer wants. the customer on this and a whole set of knives inssisted on the combination. He's a car dealer here in central texas, and they tend to like a lot of flash for a little cash. They wear heavily diamond encrusted Rolex Watches here like water. this knife was made before the actual Loveless Connection Knives. I'm sorry it bothers your sensibilities. Bob has also used materials he didn't want to use. We all have. that is those of us that have made a living making, for as long as we have. I'm a Knife maker. I'm not here to please everyone. Just my customers, and myself. Dont like the handle mat. Don't order it. if there is a real problem, Bob still has a ph# in Riverside. I know it works, I talked to him just yesterday. Mike :D P.S. Thank's Steven. mike

As they say. "To each his own." I don't know who "they" are, but I agree. It all boils down to taking care of the customer. In the end...

If you don't like it, don't buy it.

Mike,
You've got some great looking work posted. The Bear sets are fantastic.

Thanks Fliprfly. Most of us attend a few shows each year, read the knife pub's. and are exposed to some of the finest work on the planet, on a daily basis. We have to rember that the vast majority of knife users, have never seen a custom. Loveless once said that we were looked on by the average person as a freak show. Making knives for a living. You must be nutts. This was back in the mid 80's. Not that long ago for a lot of us. I hunt with a beautiful custom rifle, and carry a Les Baer. TRS, as my every day carry. many of you may not know the Les Bare. My point exactly! I may go on a hunting trip with a fellow who has a Mossburg, that he has used for decades. Who am I to tell him it is of inferior quality. The point is, this was the customers first forey into the custom world. It could still be a United, or Frost on his belt. He should be commended for having the forsight stepping up rather than condemed. Yea. I know. Polypearl. "CRAP" Weak, and fake. I tried to get him into a much better handle mat. My favorite is Green Canvas Micarta. It is also Bob Loveless Fav. Guess what. It is also synthetic. Many just a few years thought of it as Fake. When I started, Anything but stagg was looked down upon. For Collecting. Ivory, was the hot ticket. Over the years, even our own oppinions and snobery has changed. For good or bad,I don't know. Only time will tell. One thing for sure "IT WILL CHANGE!!!" Buy what you like. It's your knife. Mike

Bob enjoyed your talk! mike

In my opinion, Mike makes some of the finest Loveless style knives around, but I also have to agree that the Poly Pearl and brass is a pretty unpleasant combination. I think I would sooner have a Pakkawood handle, but that's just me.

Mike, hopefully you have reached a point as a knifemaker where you are busy enough that you don't feel it necessary to use materials that you are uncomfortable using.

keith I've been to that point for at least 20 years. but then again, the customer is an old friend, which means he gets what ever he wants. Custom means what the customer wants.:barf: Not what I want. :jerkit: My mistake was putting in the pic of it. Guess i'm not the only snob on here. Heee! Heee! At least he didn't ask for fossilized Dino Crap!!! Then again I think that without the customer, we would all be without a job!!!. Let's not take our selves too seriously.:D Mike
