Who Makes The Best Stockman?

Oh common, play along...even Bill Maher isn't cynical alllllll the time....well, maybe he is.

I was being serious. Sooooo much depends on the expectations of the end line user. Is price a huge factor? What about steel? For some, good stainless is a must, for others, nothing but carbon will do. Me, I prefer rounded bolsters - other guys feel a "real" stockman has to have square bolsters. Delrin or whatever that bomb-proof stuff they put on the Buck 301 and 303 is the perfect answer for some guys, but others wouldn't think of toting a stockman unless it had bone or stag handles .... or yella plastic. Now, what about main blade: Clip point or long, slender Turkish clip? Want a spey blade or a pen instead?

I have yet to find my personal "best" stockman, the one that fits my exacting requirements. I'll be sure to post here when I find it, guys. :)

You're right...the question should probably be....what is your favorite stockman?......would you play along then??:D

Case yellow scaled Stockman, whatever size works for you. I have a Case large CV 6.5 bonestag Stockman, and it's an amazing worker, that's for sure.

thx - cpr

Having just finished a week with my first Trad slippie (case amber stockman SS), I found that a stockman pattern seems perfect for EDC but was wondering whats better in the market place? (either manufacture or steel) Cheers

This is actually 'how long is a piece of string' question :)

Buck - Delrin -Wood - SS
Boker - Bone- Stag - Carbon -SS
Case - Bone - Stag - Delrin - Carbon - SS - Damascus
Canal Street - Bone -Stag - SS
GEC - Bone - Stag -Acylic - Carbon
MooreMaker - Delrin Bone - Carbon
Queen - Bone - Wood - D2 . Abalone and Pearl - SS
Schatt & Morgan - Bone - SS - ATS34

From 3 1/4" to 4 1/4"

I am sure I left someone out...

They are all good, so go choose according to your wallet and pocket!

I carry a Queen made Mooremaker 4 1/4" stockman everyday. I have a bunch of different stockman, but that one is my favorite. The best? I don't know, but I do have a favorite!

I've found my Case Med Stockman in CV and Amber Bone to be quite neat. I've never really had as much use for a spey blade as I do the pen blade. I really like this variation. Otherwise, the Buck stockmen are my favorite. I had a 371 that was just about perfect in size and weight for me. Loved the shape of the main clip blade too. Wouldn't hesitate to pick another one up.

Sure! It's a Case chestnut bone medium stockman with rounded bolsters and CV clip, sheepfoot and pen blades. Sadly, it doesn't exist. :(

I'd take that one in Amber Bone too. Trading a spey for a pen would be great.

Case did make the 6318 pettern with sheepfoot and pen secondary blades...it was in the Case line until 1981.

The 3318 was also made with a pen in place of the spay, also discontinued in 1981.

It is very personal and subjective, but I prefer the older knives.
Case or Schrade are usually great choices. Sounds like some of the current production stuff is of great quality too...

There are also a couple members here that do a fantastic job on slipjoints

IMHO there is no best, just what seems to be the best at the time yer carrying it, or when ya find a new knife that ya can't live without :D We all know that's subject to change though :D

I understand,

When comments about Buck stockmen are expressed with comments of there utility and strengh. But not 'chrome' and paint. And I will agree, one of my endearments that got me collecting them was there 'tank' like spirit.

But I have a thread where folks are talking about stockmen so I just can't let the chance pass to wave my collectors flag a little. Everyone is usually decent in there comments so I have no complaints when Bucks are called 'utilitarian' and built to work. But even a blind hog gets an acorn now an then.
So, here are some 'fancy' Buck stockmen. First photo is of discontinued models only available by searching. The second photo is of knives currently available from normal sellers, except the pearl will be white. They are 303 top two photos and 301 stockmen bottom photo. All 420HC , middle and bottom photo Bos heat treated. For your viewing enjoyment......300Bucks

Top: Jigged Brown Bone, Jigged Red Bone
Bottom: Yellow Delrin, Red Delrin

My eyes may be going but that looks more like a congress to me.

The three I EDC the most are my Queen In D-2 Wwith Burnt Stag Scale, my Buck 303T with imitation Pearl Scales, I like this one a lot 'cause it is wider and has thicker blades than the rest, and finally my Northwoods Forum Stockman.

It is called a cattleman design, but the Queen made Ontario RAT cattleman folder is my favorite. Good fit and finish, great snap. I really like that the spey blade has been replaced with a leather punch. Did Queen ever make any cattleman/stockman folders with three blades and a leather punch?
