Who Makes The Best Stockman?

The three I EDC the most are my Queen In D-2 Wwith Burnt Stag Scale, my Buck 303T with imitation Pearl Scales, I like this one a lot 'cause it is wider and has thicker blades than the rest, and finally my Northwoods Forum Stockman.

That Queen in Stag is nice!

I have a Case brown bone and CV 63032 3.5 stockman. It has a penblade instead of the spay. This knife is close to if not precicely my personal perfect pattern.

Here is my huge Stockman collection. The top two are German made, the bottom is USA made. The Boker Tree Brand came pretty sharp earlier this year - neat jigged redbone - it was from an evil-bay dealer ~$36. The Puma stag was $28(!) at a local Academy when they were phased out - not very sharp. The Buck 301 came as a razor some twenty years back - at a Gatlinburg, TN gift shop (I had lost my 110 and needed something in my pocket while hiking.) for $24 then. Note how it's secondary blades are reversed from the German examples.

I'll come clean... I am not much of a slippie person. I have never, gasp, owned a Case!

Stainz

Stainz, that Puma looks a cool cat! So does the Böker, and the Buck's a clear worker. And you say you're not much of a slippie type??

eye brand made previous to 1995 moore maker made by queen if you get lucky henckels prior to 1970. these knives ca'nt be used for prying.buddy snapped a blade on eye trying to open poptop.the hardness is greater & they will cut a long time.of course all are high carbon.

I really like GEC's #53 "Cuban" models. They're beautifully made, and work well. Unfortunately, they're not very pocket-friendly.

I love Schatt & Morgan's sowbelly stockman- although I don't know if that's considered cheating. I also love Case's small stockman- I have one in tangerine bone that I've used as my "travel knife" and have carried all around the world, which has held up magnificently. I have several other Case stockmen, both medium and large, which I've never really taken to. Something about the medium and large Case patterns seems "off" to me- the proportions are wrong or something.

The Buck 301 is a classic, and a fine knife. 300 Bucks has me green with envy over here (again) with some of those beautiful things he's pulled out for this thread.

I have a new favorite: Cold Steel Large Stockman with Carbon V blades.

My vote goes to Imperial, I have a blue (some kind of plastic/celluloid/something scales) that I got when I was 12 that I think is the best stockman I've ever owned. Sadly I don't EDC it anymore (I carry a case CV trapperlock now) but whenever I've got a job to do like carving or making myself a leather sheath that Imperial stockman is my go-to knife. I'm not sure what steel Imperial used or what kinda HT they had going but it has some excellent edge retention, tough, and the blade is THIN! By far the best slicer I have bar none. The Spay blade on this hones up better than my straight razor. Last time I've sharpened it was two years ago, it's sees some strop action before and after every use, I have I'd say 95% of the original blade shape left.

Then again this is the only knife I have from Imperial, so I could just be really lucky and got a gem.

Does anyone know when Case last made a large stockman in yellow CV? You don't see too many of those around.

Edit: D'oh. Looks like I partially answered my own question. Tang stamp reads "2004" (I think)
What a beauty.

My favorite two working stockman knives are fromCold Steel and have been discontinued due to the closing of Camillus. Sadly when they closed Cold Steel lost their source of Carbon V. This was a wonderful carbon steel and these knives take and hold a great edge, the fit and finish is on par with knives that cost twice as much. I have both sizes of the CS stockmen...

I am not above fancy stockman knives either...lol. Here are a couple examples of my "Sunday go to meeting" stockman knives...

Stupid decision on their part.

I'm sure Case will eventually get around to making those again. I think they end up making most of their patterns in "yaller" at one time or another.:thumbup: I don't think the large stockman pattern will be going away anytime soon. They will be releasing the large stockman in "American Workman Blue Synthetic" later this year. I will be all over that series when it comes out.

There's an out of production Schatt & Morgan File & Wire Stockman in ATS-34 (I think neeman may have mentioned it in a previous post.)
It's the usual super Schatt build quality paired with a premium stainless - a very rare combo in the stockman pattern.

Also, now Great Eastern/Northfield/Tidioute is making a few 3 blade knives that aren't technically stockmen, but they're great knives. (1095 stainless blades).

The one I'd go with - again, not technically a stockman, but close enough, is the previously mentioned Queen Cattle King. Really well well made, with D2 blades.

The big Case (4-1/4") in CV (Amber Bone scales) is also a winner IMO.
