Who still carries a Case Knife?

I always get nervous when a new Case hits my mailbox. No worries necessary this time. Tight blades and great action. Might be a tiny bit of rub, but that is normal in my opinion. Great job Case! The Stockman pattern is one where they consistently out perform GEC, whether it’s the large version like this one or the medium. I have never owned a GEC Stockman that felt completely correct to me. This big boy was built right.

Ditto for the following Large Stockman Greg Leslie Tomville Leslie Tomville . Case meets or exceeds GEC's offerings for their large pattern stockman knives across the board.

Great knives! Those are two of my favorite covers! Case really does that Peach Seed and Bone Stag well.

It frequently seems that the pile side tends to be better in my experience. The razor isn't the most popular, but I'm liking this one pretty well.

Hey, thanks for posting that beauty! You just cost me some hard earned cash! 😜😁Any chance you could show us the pile side, when you have a chance? Lance

Well, I'm hoping to carry this anyway.

A Case of Neglect

Case XX - 1784 to 1984 Clarksville Bicentennial Trapper with jigged bone handle scales.
Near Mint - Never been sharpened or used - No box - Some patina on the blades - Two backsprings (three pieces total) - Might need some clean-up and lubrication. NFSOT

My old high school runnin' buddy sent this to me after his brother passed. His brother served in Vietnam and never did recover after returning home. I knew him before he left for the service, and he was a changed man after flying Hueys over there. His life was troubled for the remainder of his days, so this neglect is forgiven in my mind.

Upon receipt of this knife, I discovered that the clip blade backspring was broken. It appears maybe someone had tried to open the blade before working the spring loose. I contacted Case about repair, but apparently they have changed their tooling since then and will not even look at it. That was a few years ago. I put it in a baggie and on the shelf while I've pondered what to do with it.

I've wished to, at the very least, turn it into a workable knife, albeit a bit ugly for sure, and to do so in Eddie's memory. So here goes...
Let's begin with a bit of soaking to loosen things up a bit.

Well, that worked.

Following a goodly amount of chipping, filing, sanding, scuffing, and polishing...
Hmmm? I think I see some blade re-profiling in my future.

Say, that had to be some quality etching on that blade.

It's serialized too. Cool.

Now to address that broken backspring issue (the only time I've ever regretted retiring from my machining background). I suppose a replacement spring is my only option.
An extensive search for an affordable and appropriate donor knife has finally paid off, and it looks like a good candidate for harvesting a backspring. I'll be back with another post showcasing that one soon.
