Who thinks Spyderco is currently one of the leaders in the industry?

Since Spyderco started I have carried one or another in my pocket, and no other brand. There are better folders but none that work as well for me at the right price, the right size, the right shape, high quality. They are an industry leader in variety offered and quality. I am no longer suprised when I see a Spyderco on a friend or a stranger on the street. I am curious if production numbers exist how they compare, since date of startup, with quantity sold by all others since that date.

I own Spyders, BM, Kershaw, Emerson, Strider BUT I CARRY Spyderco. I have carried them all over the world for 20+ years, they have done everything I asked of them and done it well.

People forget their accomplishments:

1. the hole

2. the pocket clip

3. serrations that work

4. more durable, safe, user friendly locks than anyone else

5. ergonomics- function over form/design in the dark

6. working with and designing knives with their users/customers

If it were not for them, where would the others be. If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery the Spyderco should feel really good about itself. I know I do.

In short Spyderco has a face, it is Sal, Eric, Taz, Joyce and everyone else at the plant PLUS the face of every end user who comments on these boards, at the gun/knife shows, calls CS or SFO. Spyderco is its users and its creators.

And I for one do not want it any other way.

I totally second Bigkahunasix's opinion. I've tried others out of a sense of adventure/fairness, but I carry Spyderco and I gift Spyderco to friends and family.

What I love about Spyderco is their no-nonsense work knives - Delica, Endura and the Salt range.

Got to love their fanatical fanboys too. .

Agreed ever since I got my CF caly III and my E4 waved the only thing to squeak its way into my pocket was a $350 William Henry Titan II and a solid 90% of my need to buys are all spyderco.

Spyderco is certainly tops as a maker of small folders. If I had a
splinter, I'd sure prefer a Spyderco Native any day. Also, if I had to cut
a chute free, a Spyderco would be what I'd reach for. As for leader in
the self defense knife industry, I'm not so sure.

I think that spyderco and kershaw both are really pushing the industry forward. they are taking risks on new technologies and making them available to the masses. they always seem to be looking forward and bucking tradition. kudos to them both. that being said I do not own knives from either manufacture they do not fit my personal style. however if they bring there high tech approch into a design that i like I would certainly not hesitate to pick it up.

I strongly beleive that Syderco is one of the leaders of the production knife market. We all owe a lot to Sal.

Spyderco is an important company with quality products.

They haven't yet made a knife I want to own and use.

So for my purposes, I don't consider them leaders in the field.

The "leading" company can only be chosen by defining what is a leader.

By production quality, spyderco is not the leader. The industry has consistently given this Blade award to Chris Reeve Knives. Has spyderco ever received it?

By production volume, spyderco is certainly not in the top 5, maybe not the top 10 if you count world sales. If you count only what they produce (most of their knives are subcontracted to other makers) they are not in the top 10.

By design, spyderco used to be a leader with serration pattern, the hole and the clip. However this is all old stuff, patents have run out etc. For the last 5-10 years spyderco designs have not been good enough for any knife company to copy including Asians. Many of their new innovations, cobra hood (copy of Terzula's thumb disk), compression lock (variant of the frame lock), ZDP steel (first used by WH), etc are just spyderco variants of other's ideas.

By the quality of materials, spyderco may be in the top 10, but their lack of any knife with a titanium handle or a knife w/o a stainless blade puts them out of the top 5.

By marketing, spyerdco is not in the top 10. Spydercos ads are few, far between and uninspiring. They used to be better.

By hype and hubris, they are a leader, in the top 10, but surpassed by Chris Reeve, Cold Steel, Extreme Ratio and anything from the Frost/Taylor/SMKW group.

They are the leading knife maker in Colorado :)

Just to clarify, I ask if you believe Spyderco is currently A leader, and not necessarily THE leader. Though your points are noted and respected.

Hey brownshoe! Got to the party a bit late, didn't you.... ;)

Better late than never :)

But to give spyderco their due, they are certainly one of the leaders on this forum. Probably in the top 5 for folding production knives.

No one can deny that they are "a" leader. So, too, for what it's worth, are Cold Steel, Columbia River and Benchmade. Spyderco has also found some niches in the law enforcement community, thanks to people like Massad Ayoob. Even though the question was directed at whether it was a leader in the industry, it really kind of begs opinions on the knives themselves.

For a small pocket knife I have never found the need to carry anything else. When choosing teh knife to clip on or slip in a pocket...I always reach for one of the Spyderco's....always worked always will.

Let's see, plenty of innovation, a reputation for quality, many models, good value for the money--yes, I would say that's an industry leader. I like other makers too, not sure how to rank, a ranking is probably artificial anway, unless it's something objective like gross sales or something. In which case I imagine SAK would eat pretty much everyone's lunch, no?
