Without knowing numbers, I must add that one can't make a top three when there are at least a top five owning the market, and that's "our" market on bladeforums or knifeforums or on any other specialized website. Because if you were to take a poll of the top five - which I believe to be (in no order of "the best") Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw, CRKT and SAC - in cities across America and the world for that matter, how many people would know these brands? The vast majority would know of SAC, then Spyderco, then Benchmade/Kershaw and then probably CRKT and it would drop like a cliff after that.
You can give Chris Reeves the award all you want for making the best production folder, but what percentage of the buying market knows about him and then you get into the argument of who exactly is the buying market because Chris Reeves makes a pretty specialized knife. Take for example my trip today through the local Dick's Sporting Goods store. For a rather large chain (like Cabella's) it didn't have ONE KNIFE!!! that I would've bought. "Ridiculous!" I shouted to myself, but then I remembered this is Dick's, and the vast majority of hunter's and campers aren't looking for S30V and a titanium handle. They could use a Spyderco for sure but they're not even offered that... instead Gerbers and Remingtons flooded my retinas. In fact, the best thing they had was a SAC and a Leatherman selection... of which weren't great.
So... back to the subject, is Spyderco a leader in the industry - of course, but it's "industry" you have to define... not "leader."

P.S. Where's Sal... ?
