Who uses their 'high-end', expensive knives?

My most expensive knives are only Benchmades and ZTs, but I would have no compunction using a CRK or Hinderer.

I feel exactly the same way. I'm not one to buy something and have it just sit there. Almost all of my knives are over $100 but under $300 and I carry and use each and every one of them.

I am curious how many knives are we talking about?

these looked more used before their regrinds. Since the regrinds, the caly hasnt dont all that much cutting, mainly food but the para has cut a lot, it just doesnt like showing wear... This pic makes em look too pretty

I have several BRKT's that cost upwards of a couple Benjamins each. I bought them to use, and I use them all the time.

Buying a knife and not using it seems kind of like buying a good bird dog when you don't hunt.

My knife that seems the most use and carry is a small CRK Insingo. Put a new bevel with my Edge Pro and it gets dropped into my front pocket with my keys. It has some scuffs (character) on the handles and fine scratches on the blade but it only makes it look better. I don't abuse it but I do use if for things like scraping by using the back of the spline. Last night I used it to cut through an acorn squash that even my kitchen knife would not make it all the way through without pounding on the spline of the blade.

A knife doesn't care if it's used or not, a knife can be used at anytime you own it and it will work the same as the day you bought it. A knife can be kept for years unused and sold for as much or more, than you paid for it. Can you really say the same about a hunting dog?

I don't see anything wrong with that. If you really like a bird dog and want to keep it as a pet, that's your money and your responsibility.
If you want to buy and knife and just collect them without using, that's your business. I think a lot of people save up and spend a good amount on a good knife, they can/should be able to do whatever they want with it.

They can do whatever they want with the knife, but some people here get upset at the idea of people owning NIB knives. I have a lot more NIB knives than users and I've had people here get highly offended at me over it. Truth is I wouldn't have so many just to use. I like to collect and I like them pristine and not devalued. I use what I feel I need to and it's only about 10% of what I have.

Interesting, I don't see any problem with collecting. :)

People collect all kinds of stuff. Why should knives be excluded from collecting?

Seems the difference between knives a other things that are collected is the attitude of some of the members of the community. I see no dishonor in keeping a knife BNIB.

My hat is off to those who spend $500+ on a knife and use the hell out of it. Many members life style can't support those desires.

I use my large Sebenza daily at work to open rolls of paper, cut tape and cardboard. Today we had prime rib for lunch and it sliced mine along with two co-workers. I nearly made two sales for CRK up 'til they asked for their price. They at least know what a good knife is though.

Like the OP, my most expensive knife is a BM 940 1011 limited edition of 300 all black. granted its one of their cheaper sprint runs at pretty much normal price. that said I still use it and the blade coating as well as the handle anodizing has scuffs and scrapes in it. If I know im gonna be working somewhere where I might abuse a knife like the auto or welding shop Ill use a cheaper knife and I am always careful with how I use my 940. I think when I buy a more expensive knife, like a crk or a hinderer, I will buy it to be used. I just can't afford a safe queen.

I've thought about this a lot. Certainly nothing wrong with investing a lot of money into a knife and using it, there are probably people here that have paid near $50k for a new pickup and immediately started driving it! It's easier to enjoy a knife without using it though.

I see many knives in the exchange that are NIB, and many knives for sale that are lightly used but with the original edge, and the original box seems to be of value too. I can only guess that lots of people like to look at and handle expensive knives but they don't want to do anything that would affect the value of a knife because they intend to sell it some day. I can understand that, I know that once I start using a knife it is at risk of wear that would devalue it. And many of us buy enough knives that we will always be replacing one with the next one so why devalue one that you will probably want to sell someday.

OTOH once you have picked a knife or knives that you like and intend to keep for awhile, you can get more pleasure out of actually using them.

I collected custom hunting knives for a long time, with no intention of ever using any of them. I don't see a problem with that because they are an art form and I get pleasure out of holding them and looking at them. At the time I had picked out a less expensive knife to actually use if I went hunting but I hunt very little. Today I think if I was going to hunt more I would pick out a couple of my nice custom knives and actually use them.

I have a good number of folders too, but no really expensive ones. I like looking at them and playing with them, but I can do a lot more of that if I actually carry them. I have one that I bought recently and one that I bought many years ago that I haven't carried yet, thinking I might not keep them. The rest I carry and use.

Me!

as the other members goes, at first, yeah I can't think about using expensive knives. Mum used 1$ knives and cheap cutters and it works. Why I should shell out much more money for a tool for cutting? That was 3 years ago. at that time I knew I'm still doesn't think what a good knife is. But because the cool factor, I started buying cheap cool folders. I didn't satisfied with its performance. Then I chime in on our local Indonesian Blades forum. my friend there said "every knife person should own an Opinel". Long story short, I bought a carbon Opinel #10. I was impressed. That's my first real knife, and I learn how to sharpen and do maintenance from it.

And then I start wondering... if the more expensive ones should be more amazing in term cutting. then I chime in on Bladeforums. at least I ended on using quality blades. Well that's my story... :)
