Who Wants The "native Chief?"

Should Spyderco Make the "Native Chief?"

  • Yes--it's the design that counts! FRN and Endura spec quality is fine.

I love my Native more than ice cream.

Since I already wear suspenders I have often thought of a slightly more substantial Native retaining the same magnificent ergonomics and the black (discrete) theme.

My dream Native III, Chief, Brave or whatever would have very thin steel liners, a more substantial pivot pin and a slightly thicker blade.

Until my dream Native comes along I remain ever so grateful to Spyderco for the original.

Incidentally, I sharpened the swedge of my Native and yes, I have cut myself several times.

Interesting thread, thanx. We'll see if there is still interest in a large G-10 Native.

Sitting here reviewing this thread and examining my Native, I don't think Spyderco can improve upon perfection.
It would seem like quite a challenge to make this knife any larger without losing its profoundly pleasing ergonomics.
I can hardly wait to see what comes of this.

Yeah, I can see myself buying the larger Native as pictured. It looks pretty good. The tip looks a little too narrow for my liking, so I would probably change the tip on mine a bit by widening it a little, something I am wont to do on occasion. I would tilt the edge up a little at the tip, widening the tip and giving the edge a little more belly. Doing this would take off around 1/8" of the tip, maybe 3/16", no big deal. Otherwise that larger Native looks like a worthy larger brother to the regular Native, which is one of my favourites. The handle ergonomics look nice, with the two finger choils, a feature I really like, and the gentle downward curve of the spine of the handle would fit in the palm of my hand well.

So do it.

And send me free knives.

Sal: I'd get one if I have the cash.
Ok now I really need to get a part time job. McDonalds anyone? :p

So far 50% of pollees would want the FRN version, with another almost 32% going for the upscale scales, etc.

Not baaaaad. Yeah, I know this is not a very "scientific" poll due to the probability of those more interested responding. And the most interested folks are the ones who want the knife!

At least Sal has a bunch of more focused comments on both the idea of a larger Native and the pining for more G10 Natives!

Ken, I think that if the Spydie hole is kept the same distance from the pivot, and the size/shape of the handle near that area is left alone, adding another one-half to three-quarters inch won't affect the ergonomics. What I find is great about this design is the ease of use of the hole, part of which function is this ergonomic distance (at least for me--my hand is slightly smaller than the average male my size--5'10").

The idea about the multicolored FRN is to attract those who might not want FRN otherwise, but who might buy one due to the new, novel handle color scheme. I just don't know the feasability of mixing/swirling different FRN colors in the same mold.

And again, for all I know, it would be cheaper for Sal to do another run of G10 "standard" Natives to gage interest at the price point, etc.

Wouldn't another G10 Native run be cheaper than the first due to tooling and experience?

I think Karl makes a good analysis of the blade hole to pivot relationship and the probability of retaining the Native's fantastic ergonomics.
I want one.

Hi Guys!

I've been on a 5-6 month hiatus from my computer, kinda, sorta. I poked my head in here a handful of times during that period to see what's new. This thread has really stoked my interest and I feel I need to throw in a vote for this outstanding design.
Guys, this knife looks like it has winner written all over it. It's sleek and sexy and has the look of a 200 mph sports car. In a premium steel and G-10, it's a "must have" for any Spyderco fan. Me especially.:)

I'm hoping this one makes the grade and goes into production.

All the best!

(prefer black)G10 scales, VG-10 steel, full flat grind, optional tip down carry(?), and thin profile....equals :DPERFECT:D Native Chief.

Poppa Spyder, I think that you'd have a real winner with this one.

I would get one in a heartbeat!!!:)

With all respect, tip-down would make it a different knife.
In its present configuration, the Native's clip switches to either side in seconds, with only a penny or a dime as a tool.
This allows the user to play with endless waistband and pocket carry options, from middle of back to appendix to crossdraw to conventional strong side pocket.
Additionally, having the clip rooted at the butt end allows the user to hold the Native in a paintbrush grip.

Genuinely ambidextrous...paintbrush, saber, hammer and reverse grips...perfect.

I certainly will buy one, even if I have to sell one or more of my other knives to do so. Sal please build this!
I agree with those who want a larger version of the SAME Native we all love. Change it too much and it won't be a Large Native. It'll just be another knife. Of course, I'll probably need that one as well

Really, change anything other than the size and it will lose its Native qualities.
Just changing its size without losing the ergonomics represents a sufficient difficulty in itself.

Ken,

I agree. Sal's design is so good that it's possible that any change would be negative.
"Just changing its size without losing the ergonomics represents a sufficient difficulty in itself"
Again, you are correct.

I need to make sure I have the money (and my wife's permission) and so I will buy no knife until I can buy the new Native.

How about a Name the New Native contest with the first production Native going to the winner?
