Maybe we should say what period we're talking about. The Silver Surfer had just started appearing in Fantastic Four comics when I moved on to other things. Some of these guys I never even heard of....
When I was a kid I was into Marvel comics, just about exclusively. I thought DC comics sucked. What really turned me against DC was the letters to the editors section. People would write in and talk about what they liked and make suggestions, and the editors would respond, "Oh, you're one of those people who want to have everything your way, huh? You don't care what anybody else likes, you just want it your way." The whole comics were like that, talking down to the readers and treating them like little children, but the responses to letters were just naked aggression.
Stan Lee was creating intelligent comics for intelligent people. Yeah, there was a lot of pseudoscience (I was reading real science fiction at the same time) but even so, Stan Lee was trying to produce something of some quality, some literary value....
Dr. Strange was my favorite -- especially the early Dr. Strange. He started out with a couple of pages at the back of Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD, got more pages every issue until he had half the monthly comic, then Lee split them into two bimonthlies. Dr. Strange continued to be good for quite a while, but then got new artists and writers and wasn't any good any more. If you're wondering why a comic that sucked so bad was my favorite, it's probably because you didn't see the early ones....
I also liked Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD, Thor, The Avengers (which included Thor, Captain America, a bunch of others), The Fantastic Four, Spiderman ...
