Who Would Be Interested In Doing A Collaboration Classic Hunter With Me??

Roger that is great
and if you think milling it would be better
you can have chuck send it to me first,
he should still have my address.
milling keeps it a lot cooler:)
...thanks Chuck for the Ivory:)

Thanks Dan; Chuck's scales usually don't have a tremendous lot that has to be ground off. Good idea though and I have a mill I can do that with if needed.

RL

You bet. I'll send pics.

I have some no-bark ivory that is pretty thick that I was going to grind for a knife I'm making now. I was dreading the grind. As you know, ivory really loads a belt fast. I never even considered the mill. Thanks for the tip. RL

Hey All-

I finally got it done! Learned quite abit with this round of Mokume, but isn't that what it is all about?

I have two bars, chevron twist pattern, 0.315 x 0.91 x 5.0 That should be more than enough for Dan to be picky about what sections of the bars he wants to use.

I will send these to Dan tomorrow, so he should have them by Thursday or Friday.

Let me know what you all think.

Here are some bad pictures, damn I need a light box:

That is outstanding Sean. I and, I am sure, all us will be very pleased with that. Great looking work ol'buddy.

RL

Sean That is a work of art! Thanks for all the work that went in to it. I know you spent some extra time to get it just right. Its amazing!

Sean, that looks great! My jade work is coming along fine. We had one little ripple on the thickness. The dang saw didn't like tracking for 1/16", so we went to 1/8". I talked with involved parties before we made the 1/8" slices and was very happy that this was acceptable. I think it was a blessing because we have the benefit of the jade fully expressed. Looking at the 1/8" slices made me realize you would have a hard time telling what it was at 1/16". The saw we had to use needs new bearings and is the reason why the tracking problem. But WE ARE on track, and the jade looks good!

I am sitting on the edge of my seat. This is incredible reading.
This is worse than waiting for a baby.
You guys should write a book of the posts.
Good luck, I can hardly wait to see this knife!

Laredo7mm man oh man that is nice ! All you guys working together on this project is a art in itself.

Dan, soon as I can get some pics, I will post some. Good idea, guy! I could have my daughter wear her bikini and model the jade, but I know gentleman like you would not like to be distracted from the jade.

Dave, Bruce has suggested to me that the tang not be tapered to a very thin tang end so as to better protect the jade liners. He is correct, of course. Let's try to keep the end of tang to a neighborhood of about 0.075 - 0.08 inch. How's that sound with you??

RL

I agree with Roger. Too thin a tang might allow enough flex if dropped, cracking the jade, ivory, or both. It would be a different picture if we were making a thicker handle. You gentlemen know more about thin handles than I do, since most of my knives are pretty close to the 1 inch mark in thickness (hunters).

right to you both :) and remembering I'll need the blade blank profiled but not tapered >:first:,
to place the holes in it,

OK, a Grey < the Color< aria there must be some questions?

I'd like to have a blank of the blade to copy the holes to and
use as a pattern to profile the jade (for Roger) to where as it's going to be relieved as the handle is to be.
I can make the pattern but it will have to be tapered the same as the Blade to work.
as to say
I'll receive the blank and the blade
put the alianment/hold down/pin holes in both ( recording the holes from my DRO)
I'll relieve the pattern for the handle material profiling
(for Roger or I to do.)

then send the both to Dave to have them tapered exactly the same,

then them being sent back to me to fit the handle materials,

Roger prepares the jade to length and the end tapers
for the dovetails with the centers filled and sized,

so we're looking at

1 blade being profiled, sized and sent to me,
before tapering and any filing.

2 a blade blank profiled the same as the blade to use as a
pattern to be used for the relief and as the pattern/template
for the
Jade and Mokume profiling later by Roger or Myself.

2 Roger works up the jade length, does the dove tail
tapers on it and fills the centers
sizes the thickness then sends them to me,
(before final profiling.)

3 I will place the holes where need be in the blade tang
and in the blank pattern,

4 I'll relieve the pattern for the handle material profiling
(for Roger or I to do.)

5 I'll send the Blade and the pattern to Dave for the tapering
and grind on the blade then they come back to me.

6 off to Roger for the heat treat

7 then off to Steve, I believe to do the finish on the blade
before the etch..

I believe Roger is doing the shaping of the handle.
being a take apart the handle should be shaped on the pattern
while the etching is being done to the blade.
then off to the others for their parts in it.
OK guys, is this close so far? or am I way off?
:)

Dan, I assume then when you drill the tang holes, the tang will have the HT, or left soft? You want me to send you a carbide bit for the drilling? If so, what size? Your layout for the passaround sounds pretty good, unless Roger sees a snag. The jade skeleton cutout will be 1/2"width, unless you suggest otherwise. Retainer pin holes will be about 1mm, but I don't have a carbide bit that exact size. The jade retainer pin holes will be drilled with ultrasonic.I can probably come pretty close to 1mm carbide bit, though. It's in your court and Roger's, Dan. Waiting for the parts is like having an itch you can't reach.
