Who Would Be Interested In Doing A Collaboration Classic Hunter With Me??

The Jade is on its way to John. It should be there this Thursday (8/21/03). It is being shipped via USPS.

I am still on track with getting the Mokume done this weekend, as long as the sun, moon, and stars all stay in alignment. WhenI get it done I will ship it off to Dan.

I can post a picture of the completed billet if you want, but I though I would ask first to make sure it is what you all want. Might be kinda neet not to see the parts and pieces until the knife is finished.

Let me know on the picture thing.

Guys, the jade came this afternoon. I just got home from work and havn't opened it yet, but the package looks like it was handled with kid gloves and should be fine. Heh heh heh, now it's my turn to have some fun! Liners coming up! Excellent job, Sean!

John, good, I am glad it got there safe and sound. How did you like that packaging job? It gave me flash backs to wrapping X-mas gifts, but it was easier than trying to remove all the labels from that box.

Anyway, sounds like things are rolling along. Now I just got to get my sorry a$$ down in the shop and finish that Mokume. But I do have to take a little road trip on Saturday to Revanna, Michigan. I just found out about the Third annual Scagel Blade Forging and Knife Exhibition. Saturday is the free day and they have cutting demos and stuff from 1 to 4 in the afternoon. Should be neet to see and will be nice to talk to some Michigan makers in person.

More to come later on the Mokume progress. Keep your fingers crossed, and pray for good fusion.;)

Hi gents, I know I'm not a very good correspondent but I've been doing other stuff then taking a break after last weekend... :D  :D

I'm all better now. ;)

I failed to say so but I like the idea of Nick's twist too. But frankly whatever that man comes up with is gonna be heaven anyway - and I get to grind it! Yay!

Dan G mentioned sending the blade back to me for regrinding after HT, and I'm up for that. Usually I take it to 400 before HT and clean up on the grinder to 400 before any hand work; let me know if we want to do it that way. I've no problem letting Mr Sando take it with the scale on it either. ! :p !

Yes, I have a smiley twitch today and it won't go away. Dang! I bet some of you are gonna wonder what I've been smoking this morning...well, nothin. I'm just naturally odd! :p

Later, dudes,

Dave

I'm ready!

I check everyday to see if there is a package from Nick.

I had asked everyone if they had wanted a mild-steel blank, but didn't get but one respond, so I didn't pursue it.

Tell you what, Sean, that is ONE HECK of a packaging job! I am going to send it out by the same means, too. Nice work, fella!

Hey all, I have a mokume update for you.

After the all four of the other bars turned out to be junk, I started over yesterday. I broke the biggest rule there is when making Mokume; I didn't clean the pieces well enough. Stupid me!!

Anyway, after 4 hours yesterday and 9 hours today, I have four excellent bars:D Should turn out to be a nice persian twist pattern if I can get them all to fuse together. All I have left to do is mill down two of the bars to 0.45 square (from 0.50 square), clean, clean, and clean again, then fuse them, and if all goes well, mill to final dimentions.

It looks like the final dims are going to be 5/16 x 1.8 x 5.0. I was shooting for 6 inches long for the final billet, but I just can't get there from here. I reviewed the design and it looks like 4 inches would be a minimum, so 5 will give a little wiggle room.

So, if work does not end up kicking my a$$ tomorrow, I should get it done tomorrow night, mail it to Dan on Tuesday, and he should get it by Wednesday or Thursday

Ok, i just had a thought, yeah I know it is scarey.;)

If I fuse all four bars together, the stars run longways in the billet. That would mean that Dan would have to cut perpendicular to the rows of stars to get usable material for the bolsters. Now the stars are about 0.625 to 0.75 inches apart, so I am not sure how it would look since the bolsters look to be 0.75 inches wide.

The other option is to weld two bars together and have two billets of a chevron twist. That way when they are cut into the size needed, there would be more stars showing.

Make any sense? Just want to see what you all think before I weld them together.

Let me know how we want to do it.

if the stars are about 0.625 5/8" to 0.75 3/4" inches apart that we know won't work well.
I guess I missed what the steel is going to look like?
will it have stars in it? I was thinking the bolsters were going to be about the same as the Blade pattern ?

What I understood was that the steel was going to be some sort of twist pattern. I posted back on 8/06/03 about doing a multibar persian/turkish twist and did not here any negatives, so that is what I went with.

You all need to let me know what you want. I am a little miffed at this point if the 4 bar persian twist is not going to work, since I have alot (20 hours) of time into it.

Don't get me wrong though, I will make what you guys want, but it is just frustrating to run down the wrong path.;)

Anyway, I will take some pictures of what I have tonight when I get home and post them to this thread. Then you all can decide of you think it will work or not.

Do we know what the pattern on the steel is going to look like?

I found this

the stars through me off..I don't make Mokume so don't mind me:footinmou just double checking...

No big deal, plus it is Monday morning and I am at work. :barf:

Anyway, I will still post pictures tonight, it will help with explaing the whole stars thing and which way to weld the billets.

Until then, I am off to more meetings, man I love Mondays.:D :barf: :D

Here are some picture of the mokume. The next step is to clean them up more and fuse them together. Sorry for the bad pictures, but I have really bad lighting at night. The surface flaws you see are just milling marks and will be sanded out later.

This first picture is of all four bars together. If i fuse them this way, then the bolsters will have to be cut perpendicular to the length of the billet and probably only one set of stars will show. And the rows will run parallel to the blade.

The second picture is of two bars, making a chevron twist. If I fuse them this way, the bolsters will still be cut perpendicular to the billet, but two to three stars will be able to show. And the stars will run perpendicular to the blade.

Let me know which way you guys want to go, or if you don't like the possible patterns here, I can make something different. I won't fuse them until I get sign off from the team.

Until then, I would appreciate some feedback from everybody, just to see what you all think. I wish the pictures did this stuff justice. I will update the pictures tomorrow when the sun gives me better light.

Sean, were you able to print out a full scale of Michael and Steve's profile work so that you would know the amount of area used by bolster material?? If not I think Dan or I can tell you that.

That's some kind of work you've done there.

I see alot of figure in photo #1 because of the way the light hit it. I am anxious to see what Dan says about this and will defer to him on making an opinion. Other than that, I would say the more stars the better - so I will go with your concept #2.

Roger

Sean those are beautiful! Wish I lived somewhere near you so I could learn how to do this. Anyway. I can't offer a preference as to which pattern I like best; would prefer the most visible stars I think, oriented along the axis of the knife. ?

Dave

My vote is what ever you guys decide on the mokume. It is going to be great stuff, either way. By the way, the mokume was a great idea.
