Who's EDC has a blade smaller than 3 in.?

I carry a larger folder, either a bm 806 or a timberline large wortac, as well as a smaller folder, a kershaw vapor or a small slipjoint.

I like others have been downsizing my EDC knives, and lately carrying my Michael Vagnino custom framelock with flatground dropoint(2 7/8")blade, a Tony Huffman custom whittler slipjoint, and a Kershaw boron carbide coated Chive as a moneyclip.
I also on a Gary Graley belt sheath carry a Phil Boguszewski custom with 3 1/2" blade about 70% of the time but rarely use it, and carrying it less, and less.
I like others find that a knife with less than 3" blade does 99% of what I need cut, and they are more sheeple friendly to not get stares, etc.

I carry a SOG Sculptura, for everyday task I find I don't need an increadibly large blade and the Sculptura fits my hand good.

Another great small knife is the Dodo by Spyderco. I recently picked up an ATR and a Dodo. The ATR was the knife that really impressed me at first, but the Dodo has really grown on me. The handle really fit my hand well and the blade is one sharp little cutter!

Due to Britain's sensible, moderate & effective knife laws :barf: I often carry a Spyderco "Union Jack " Pride in a Blackie Collins cordura pouch. I wear it horizontally just to my left of my belt buckle.

Unless I get rebellious, when it's time for the BM710, the SERE 2000, the Sebenza.....

My EDC the last few months is most often a CRK Mnandi. I find it's 1.4 ounce weight coupled with its sturdy construction ideal. I've also found it's a great cutter and most non-knife folks seem to regard it as a conventional, non-threatening pocket knife.

Blade-Tech Journeyman karambit.
The masters model is available but the journeyman is an EDC in rotation dependant on my current activities.

Who's eyebrows are we worried about raising? Don't the people we live and work with know us? Does anyone really think that it's not normal to pull out a 3.5 inch blade to cut open a box? Someone might make a joke, but would that colleague/friend/family member really believe you have gone psycho? I don't get it.

Small Sebenza and a Simonich Bitteroot on the key chain. Never needed anything bigger, even when cleaning game. I also know I won't carry a big knife everywhere, so what's the point if you won't have it with you. If fact, sometimes the Sebenza stays home and the Mnandi or Umfaan goes for a ride.

Hmm... Swiss Tech Utili Key? That's pretty small and it has a knife blade that doesn't look more than 1 1/2" long I never use the serrated part, and the PE part must be maybe 3/4" long(altho it's not in front of me right now to measure). I never go anywhere without it... And if I did, I wouldn't get far without the other keys with it on the ring! LOL.. Mostly I use it for the screwdriver though. I must say that I was a little uncomfortable opening it up for the screwdriver handle until the blade dulled a little... I kept thinking I was going to have to carry some band-aids around with me! Never happened(maybe because I was careful?).

Otherwise I usually have either a Griptillian or Delica in my pocket.

I keep a Barry Dawson neck knife in my pocket. The blade is about 2" and the OAL is about 5". His niece Lynn is working on another neck knife that I plan to use for EDC that will have a 1.5" blade and is only about 4" OAL. They're small, but sharp, and handle all of the chores that I encounter.

I'm wondering who carries an EDC that is less than 3 inches and why do they carry it?

1st of all: Benchmades are great knives.

2nd: I've never carried any large folders for EDC. It's useless, heavy, and it frightens people. 2 1/2" to 3" range is optimal. I carry, depending on what I'm gonna be doing:

- Gerber AR 3.00 (the 3" blade is a little soft, being 440A, but it's a low maintenance, tough knife) ;

- Opinel No. 6 (it's cheap, and the carbon steel blade is incredible: great blade geometry, and great edge retention... but it rusts... Besides the round handle makes it a little thick in the pocket)

- Some old Spyderco... I forgot the model... 2 1/2" G2 steel plain blade with metal handle (extremely tough blade, but a little too thick for easy slicing. Very comfortable to carry.)

- Gerber Chameleon 2 (good ATS-34 blade, but the lock sucks and it's too hard to open... almost can't open it with one hand... This one stays at home most of the time)

My dream EDC folder would be:

- 3" blade, with a geometry close to the Opinel
- ATS-34 or better stainless blade, at 57-59 RC with good resiliency
- flat, metal handle (like the Spyderco) with clip...
- tough, reliable lock...
- easy and smooth to open with one hand...
- without a stud! Holes are better, since that damn stud gets in the way too often when cutting...

Anyone has a folder to propose with all those qualities?

Any input appreciated!

Best regards,

David

Why not a Spyderco?;) Spyderco has a few knives that fit this description.

Easy rider, I carry the sub 3" category because the folders I have are very light and carry well. Additionally, the knives are pretty low key and generally attract little attention from people. I do have larger folders for weekends and outdoors. Here is my rotation:

Benchmade 770 CF
Benchmade 770 G-10 with D2 blade
Mnandi
Small Sebenza
Benchmite - only when I don't want a clip showing.

In my opinion, sub 3 inch blades are called "pen knives." Cute and all, but not worth more than opening mail or peelin' apples.
