Who's gotten their 5.1 Starter?

haha I was thinking the exact same thing standard....for helpful context, I work for a medium sized defense contractor and every day deal with outside vendors. The most applicable one would be local machine shops that turn designs into reality. Designs start out as clean pretty CAD models, reality (especially at scale) is a whole other deal... I am not sure our local machine shop has ever hit one of their self imposed deadlines. Why don't we go somewhere else? because at the end of the day they do great work at the best price...If we need something by a SPECIFIC date and we aren't willing to roll the dice, we PAY EXTRA from another shop. Usually the extra isn't worth the rush...

I don't even think the above is really a great comparison, because in that scenario the design is ours. With survive, GUY has already come up with the design, is willing to make them, and willing to sell them to us for a very consumer friendly price all while sticking to insane quality goals. I feel like more than any other knife company in the "mid-tech" world that is new they do a great job of communicating directly with consumers, and given all of the above, lets cut them some damn slack. I have a 5.1 on order to and like a kid on christmas I can not wait to play with it, but i will wait and ill be fine and it will show up and it will be glorious... lets all breathe please...this is a 3 person show helming a newish company, let them grow without being beaten down.

I once waited 6 months for a pre-paid for firesteel because the maker kept forgetting, I'm fairly sure he was a one man shop and I wasn't all that stressed, the fire steel came in and was gorgeous...

That's the one major issue with being a small company. You can make an outstanding product, but even the smallest hiccup will throw everything out of wack. I'm a one man operation and I deal with it every single week but my customers are ok with it because I'm honest and I do nice work.
I guess that's the reason why I appreciate this company. They bust their butts to make everyone a product at a price that's unthought of in this market.
I'm with you 100% on these new knives! We'll all be having a second Christmas once they start showing up!

I may have come across in my posts. I didn't expect a Survi e knife before Christmas. I DID kinda expect a Busse knife before Christmas, but it didn't happen, and I'm disappointed. For that reason, I can relate to the customers on here that were expecting. I hope Guy feels better, and I hope you had a wonderful Christmas in spite of us customers who are who are whining a bit.

No worries, I saw where you mentioned that your weren't calling us out specifically. But I know you're not the only one disappointed to not have a knife for Christmas, so I just wanted to keep folks updated and reiterate the bit about moving to Monday releases. We are looking forward to changing things up.

Clearly the quality and attention to detail is the hallmark of SURVIVE! The price is a complete value. With the new Monday sales format, will they be obtaining the holy trinity of good, cheap AND fast?!!

Don't get me started on defense contractors. Compared with that, S!K is well ahead of schedule. Can anyone say, "JSF?"

Like I've said before, I've got a bunch of knives on order, not just from S!K. I'm just disappointed that none of them came in, and that isn't directed specifically at S!K.

Haha i hear yea! I tried to get out a little while ago, but was a no go...

We had every intention of having those GSO-5.1 orders done before Christmas. The plan was to work some serious overtime in order to get them all done. Then the sand blaster went down for a few days while Guy was slow moving due to being sick. Then we realized that the proportion of 3V blades needing fixed was not in our favor, there were too many for us to put reworks off to the side until there was more time. Then the buffer wheel started acting out. Welcome to the world of manufacturing. We do have a new type of wheel coming in tomorrow to see if we can get more consistent results. In the meantime, we took a few days off for a relaxed Christmas, as well as a half day today. Tomorrow we will be back at it and I am planning to be printing a lot of shipping labels next week.

As mentioned, this is exactly why we are moving to Monday releases of already sharpened blades.

I'm glad the machines made you guys take some time off (though not happy about the headache I'm sure it has caused) You guys are doing great job!!!

I hear you here too Rockspyder!! and honestly I am not trying to go after or be unfriendly towards anyone I just got home from a 10 hr rd trip and was on a shorter than normal fuse. I just see the pass that other companies get and it just bums me out.

I would also like to add that usually my sunday rants are a bit more grumpy seeing as my football team has likely lost again and monday isn't far behind... SO the Monday sales threads will give me something to LOOK FORWARD to sunday night!!! awesome :)

One last thing from me: S!K does THE BEST job I've seen in a long time communicating with their customer base. For that I salute you, SURVIVE!Ellie!

Wow. Quite sensitive here on BF- relax

No one is really complaining about the wait

This thread is -did any one get their 5.1 starter -yes, no , people are posting how they have or have not received their knife.

No one is talking crap about SK

Ish happens, we all get that. My personal preference would have been to have my blade show up in the mail randomly vs expecting to get one by a certain date. That is it. I have waited this long, so it is not a big deal.

I look forward to my 5.1 and there is going to be a battle between it and a few Busse (ash, trash, TG) on which one is going to be my main blade.

Can't wait ! ........ Oh I mean I can wait.

I've never owned or used a Busse, and I'm sold on Survive! So I likely won't (great product, and supporting a local business) but I'd be real interested in a comparison review. Let me know if you do one, especially if it winds up in another area of BF.

As far as being sensitive, or a fanboy, if I came across that way I sure didn't mean to. I was merely trying to bring to light some facts about the area, and give another perspective.

Hell, I can by stubborn, and when I get something in my head, it's hard for me to see it differently without some outside help. Read that as my wife usually showing me how I was mistaken. I'm lucky to have her.

Anyway I was just putting the info out there to the best of my ability, and maybe let things be seen in a different light. I never meant to ruffle any feathers, and if I did, you have my apologies.

Bubba, you're right on the title of the thread, but you didn't exactly stick to a yes or no answer. I think we get where you're coming from now, so I'm glad you followed up.

Most of us have seen way more than our share of negativity towards SURVIVE!, if not here, definitely in other places, and things can escalate pretty quick on the internet. Personally, I'd like to see this place continuing to be a positive place for SURVIVE! customers and enthusiasts.

My old advice for Guy (not that he needed it) would have been to take any time line he had in his brain and multiply it by 4 and then give that time frame to customers. With the new sales format that won't be necessary though.

What firesteel did u get?

Along time ago when I was in PA I got these emails from Survive knives, I had no idea what or who they were and the blades were out of my price range at that time.

Well time went on and my idea of a "normal" knife rose then I started looking and re-found the GSO Series. But couldn't buy one and kicked my self.

Bla bla bla - pre order - woo hoo and I never had seen one in person. I have now seen a 4 I think at a gun show and I got more excited, truly a beautiful knife.

I have no doubt the 5.1 will be amazing - but I might need a bigger one as my idea of a normal fixed blade is now 6-8 inches

Not sure why people would talk crap about SK, the design is good, price is good and the quality looks good.

To stay in true form of the thread.

I did not find a GSO 5.1 in my stocking as Santa must have put me on the naughty list. I'm going to be good this year.

This is where I was coming from...Not trying to squash anyone's thoughts or opinions, but just give context that people might not have...

Since I brought the topic up as a comparison in a potentially non favorable light, I'd prefer to keep the makers name out of it but I can try and post a picture, and if you want to know who makes them so you can buy one, just email me through the forum.

I disagree that you portrayed them unfavorably, but understand your reticence. I too was immediately interested in which fire steel it was because the message conveyed to me was that it was worth the wait.

I put this in the instagram/Facebook thread, but thought I'd add it here as well:

JUST saw this on Facebook in the fan group. Someone asked about the 5.1 time line and Guy's response:

I'm working on them right now. We'll have another good sized batch going out tomorrow.

I can't find a reference on either site.
