Have you taken a M.O.S.T. course?
If not, please do so before getting a bike. Great training, and you'll save on insurance.
Take a parent/guardian along for the class and they'll go with you to get you a bike...and one of their own. Education eats fear.
Ride Safe,
Jeff
It's been sitting in my fathers shop for about 20 years! Not proud of it. Now I wanna learn, but I don't even know if it will start.
Sounds like a real project, even if the bike ran like new the day it was parked. Battery, tires, gastank, hoses and gaskets... Would be cheaper to buy a different bike. But some folks like the feeling of pride and accomplishment that comes from wrenching their own machines. Not me, I don't have to tools, space, knowledge, patience, time, or interest required to repair broken machinery. I'd rather be riding...A 20-year old Yamaha MC bike? Should be no problem if the rings havn't frozen to the cylinder wall.
Pull the sparkplug and run the starter through a couple of times. If it turns over freely, you should be in buisness. (I'm assuming it's a 2-stroke) Just make sure you have fresh gas in the tank and 2-stroke oil in the oil-injection system
Riding is a lot of fun, but don't even consider buying a bike if you can't afford proper gear (helmet, gloves, boots, jacket, and pants), bike maintainence, and insurance. The classes in Colorado are about $175 also, but you don't need a permit first. Passing the class generally qualifies you for a full MC liscense - you just show your paperwork at the DMV. You don't need to buy expensive gear for the class either, since you'll be riding very slow in a parking lot environment. Helmets are usually provided. They will probably ask you to bring your own work boots, gloves, long pants, safety glasses, and longsleeve shirt or jacket. You need the permit before you sign up, and the course is $175 over here, I think. So I'm going to have to wait a while...
When I was investigating insurance, I found that only some companies offer the discount and it usually was 10%. You sometimes get another 10% break if you're an AMA member. Like you said though, at my age insurance on each of our bikes is $35-$50 / year, so you may not save that much. If you're a young guy on a sportbike, a 10% discount could be $100 savings or more. You're also supposed to be able to get a discount on insurence,
