Underaged,

Have you taken a M.O.S.T. course?

If not, please do so before getting a bike. Great training, and you'll save on insurance.

Take a parent/guardian along for the class and they'll go with you to get you a bike...and one of their own. Education eats fear.

Ride Safe,
Jeff

You need the permit before you sign up, and the course is $175 over here, I think. So I'm going to have to wait a while... :(

It's been sitting in my fathers shop for about 20 years! Not proud of it. Now I wanna learn, but I don't even know if it will start.
A 20-year old Yamaha MC bike? Should be no problem if the rings havn't frozen to the cylinder wall.
Pull the sparkplug and run the starter through a couple of times. If it turns over freely, you should be in buisness. (I'm assuming it's a 2-stroke) Just make sure you have fresh gas in the tank and 2-stroke oil in the oil-injection system
Sounds like a real project, even if the bike ran like new the day it was parked. Battery, tires, gastank, hoses and gaskets... Would be cheaper to buy a different bike. But some folks like the feeling of pride and accomplishment that comes from wrenching their own machines. Not me, I don't have to tools, space, knowledge, patience, time, or interest required to repair broken machinery. I'd rather be riding...

Riding is a lot of fun, but don't even consider buying a bike if you can't afford proper gear (helmet, gloves, boots, jacket, and pants), bike maintainence, and insurance. The classes in Colorado are about $175 also, but you don't need a permit first. Passing the class generally qualifies you for a full MC liscense - you just show your paperwork at the DMV. You don't need to buy expensive gear for the class either, since you'll be riding very slow in a parking lot environment. Helmets are usually provided. They will probably ask you to bring your own work boots, gloves, long pants, safety glasses, and longsleeve shirt or jacket.

In some states, Illinois for instance, the classes are free because they are subsidised by the State. But they are booked months in advance.

I ~did~ get to ride over The Pass today to Colorado. The weather was cloudy and windy, but not too cold. It was refreshing to hit the highway, if even only for an hour.

Best Wishes,
Bob

Over here, after the MSF you still got to go to the DMV to get your licence, but I think it waives the ridden portion of the test. You're also supposed to be able to get a discount on insurence, not that it will help a whole lot, especially at my age....

Kawasaki W650 (retro style, parallel twin) 2000 model, but looks like a 1970.

Spring here in Oz, and many miles of cruising ahead!

Been riding for 34 years, and hoping there's another 34 to go.

You're also supposed to be able to get a discount on insurence,
When I was investigating insurance, I found that only some companies offer the discount and it usually was 10%. You sometimes get another 10% break if you're an AMA member. Like you said though, at my age insurance on each of our bikes is $35-$50 / year, so you may not save that much. If you're a young guy on a sportbike, a 10% discount could be $100 savings or more.

In PA the MSC is free, there's a beginners coures and an advanced course, they even supply the bike to learn on and test on, unfortunately the fee for the licenceand test is the applicants responsibility.

I'll be runnin' around, I have some stuff to take care off at home in the afternoon, here's my cell (What was I thinking) it doesn't work when I'm home(I live in a valley with no nearby tower) but if I'm out and about it'll ring through, tryin' give me a call, the smoke shop is about 15 mins. from my house.

Good seeing you today Ted! Hope you enjoyed the stop. Next time, hope to do some riding with ya. Followed your directions back to Jersey, thanks.
Julian

Keep your eyes on the road your hands upon the wheel (bars)!

Took a long ride in my MGB with the top down yesterday. 70 degrees in Baltimore. Love it!

Had to ride to work last week while I had a transmission put in. It was 42 one morning as I left and high 60s on the way home. Dropped my 3rd grader off for school on friday and rode 150 miles with 10 others from work through beautiful Hocking county Ohio to have lunch at a bar called JimBo's on 664. Apparently we weren't the only ones playing hookie, there were probalby 50 bikes when we left. Leaves changing and falling. Bikes always seem to run better when it is cool outside. This is the best time of the year to ride.
