Why Busse over less expensive knives?

A man and his wife were driving home one very cold night when the wife
asks her husband to stop the car. There was a baby skunk lying at the
side of the road, and she got out to see if it was still alive.

It was, and she said to her husband, "It's nearly frozen to death. Can we take it with us, get it warm, and let it go in the morning?"

He says, "O.K., Get in the car with it."

"Where shall I put it to get it warm?"

He says, "Put it in between your legs. It's nice and warm there.

"But what about the smell?"

"Just hold its nose."

The man is expected to recover, but the skunk she used to beat him with
died at the scene.
holy crap skunk that still kills me.

Busse and Swamp Rat knives are the best going, bar none. The company and people who buy and use them are a different breed. Great people, even The Bully!!

The warranty says it all about how the knives are made. Do I use my knives to the maximum extent that they are built for? No way!! If I ever need to, I know they will do their part.

I have grown from Case to Cold Steel to Spyderco to Benchmade and now to Busse. Couldn't be happier:thumbup:

This question has long since been settled. Please take a look at all three threads that I brought back up, and the original dates. Basically it's about Voracious letting Herbieduke borrow one of his Busses. I just wanted the piglets to see what kind of folks frenquent this forum. Good Ones!

Why indeed!

I've been giving the Busse line a lot of thought recently. I wanted to buy a smaller, more practical Busse for some time but Busse's offerings are so limited. They are offering only two knives at present, neither of which make a great deal of sense to me. I contacted Busse to ask if a knife like I was looking for was going to be available any time soon. They said they did not know. Well, I wondered, who should I be asking? Offering so few knives in terms of style and numbers seems like a questionable business strategy to me. These are knives after all, not diamonds.

There are many fine makers out there and I decided I'd purchase my knife from another custom maker. I would have preferred to buy a knife from Busse at a reasonable price, but they are not making it, don't know what they'll be making next, and even if they did make it, the way they restrict the flow of Busse's into the marketplace will drive the price beyond what can be justified on a cost/benefit basis. Life is just too short.

It's not all-or-nothing. Just because you can't order what you want at the moment doesn't mean that you've got to give up on getting a Busse. I first encountered Busse when they were offering SJTACs last summer. Ever since, I've been waiting for something that I can EDC. If it takes another year, then it takes another year. However, I'm not going to turn my back on this company just because I can't get what I want right now.

keep your eyes peeled on the sale forum. Stuff comes up all the time.

The diamond analogy doesnt work at all. They arent stockpiling Busse knives and releasing a few at a time. They are not a huge company, and by offering a couple models at a time they can keep wait times down. Makes perfect sense, business or otherwise. Nobody wants to wait years for a knife they ordered, so the system they have in place is great.

If you want a small EDC busse, post in the WTB section or snag one off the exchange. There are tons available and at reasonable prices. I got my EDC busse from the exchange.

Sitting there and envisioning some Machiavellian scheme designed to foil your knife purchasing plans is just plain silly.:p

Also the folks over in harms way get first dibs. If that means stopping everything until they get what they need, that's fine with me.

Maybe your right Rat. Maybe I was out of line being critical of Busse's business model. But I do understand the relationship betweem supply and demand and when demand is not being met, many business owners expand or other suppliers will fill the void. Busse has now opened Swamp Rat Knives but they seem to suffer from the same problem. If they have simply split factors of production between two companies, not much will be accomplished.

Another thing that can happen when demand is not being met is that consumers will pursue different avenues, as I did in this case and that is frustrating because I think Busse's products are of the highest quality. If Busse Combat had told me they would be making a run of Mean Streets, for example, in six months or nine months I might decide to wait a while longer and get a Busse. However, when they don't know what their own prduction schedule is, I just have to scratch my head. And as I said, there are many very talented knifemakers out there.

There have been more Busse knives for sale lately on the forums than almost any other time, maybe not directly from Busse, but available.
You're right, there are "many very talented knifemakers out there" and most of us have some of there knives also. Until Busse makes a FOLDER, I will have to buy my FOLDERS from somone else. For now, I'll sit back and wait for another new Busse release or for something interesting to come up for sale on the forums.

:D

Eight months ago I had never heard of Busse. Now I have 20 of them, with blades from 2.5" to 9.5". I have only bought 4 direct from Busse, the rest were from the Busse Store, eBay or the forums. There are lots of Busse knives around in various configurations...I was surprised how easy they were to find. And most were reasonably priced.

I can't believe it took you 8 months to collect 20 knives! I did it in less than 2 and that's another 20 that Cobalt won't get including a 1/300 SHBM.:p

Well, I did research them for a couple of months first. Of course, being overseas I had bought about half of them before I ever got to meet one in person!! Then I brought the SH-E back with me. Not being in the bush this year like I was last, not much chance to use it...but I got it if I ever need it!!

The world is full of suppliers of cheaper knives. There is only one best. Although you can get differences of opinion on what the best is, my opinion is Busse. I say that, having not handled or used many of the other great knives out there, but in reality, almost no one who will give you an opinion on this has used them all, so I go from my own experience.

If all you are interested in is price and how they look, then you are right, you don't need a Busse.

However, to someone who knows what they are looking at, a Busse is positively elegant. I look at knives through an engineer's eyes, and I look for elegant, bullet proof design. When I hold in my hand a well-balanced coming together of the best materials, design, heat treat, and ergonomics, it is beautiful. That is why I have more of them than I can possibly use in a lifetime, and not a one of them was overpriced, considering that I was willing to exchange the asking price for them. To you they are probably grossly overpriced. To each his own. I think that high end athletic shoes, high end watches, and profesional sports events are grossly overpriced, but a lot of people happily pay the price for these. I am willing to bet that it would not take long for me to find something that you have an affinity for that I would consider ridiculous.

That's a great statement.
I deal in Japanese Koi fish $$$$$$$.
Every few years there come a new latest and greatest fish breeder who hit's hard in a few big shows and the prices and availability skyrocket.
Are these" new" fish, simply due to a breeders name, far superior to the fish of other breeders who didnt place during that era ? Sure ! Some(few) of them.
Overall ? Of course not.

Now the Knife world has/had Randall. Whooo Hooo !!!. Good ? Of course !
Worth the price or wait ? That depends on the person.

Enter the Busse commie killer series of knives. Fast sharp kill 300 terra~ristez in 3 seconds flat.
Good ? I dunno. I'll order a couple.

Hype ? Maybe ?
If it fits me, and works well, his prices are perfectly OK
.SKILLED manual labor costs big money.. unless you are some Chineese ripoff outfit ( like most knife companies)

It WONT be in a sock drawer queen,, I'll tell you that much
I can ruin ANYTHING :jerkit: :(

PS. Seiko watches are far superior to Rolex.
I own a few of each...
