Why carry a big knife?

you obviously have never gone against a grizzly. .464casulle at least if your going handgun. 44mag is just gonna piss him off!

a 44 magnum is more than enough to kill i mean, give me confidence over any natural mammal in north america :) or give me time for the rifle.

knife only? geez man, i LIKE my body parts, sure, i'd try as hell to win, but ONLY a knife? gawds.

I always had a problem believing 17 Hornady Critical Defense hollowpoints fired from my XD9 at high speed and close range at ANY animals head would just be 'shrugged off'. I'm not looking to test that theory, but it doesn't make sense to me.

"shrugged off", probably not.
But self-defense rounds are specifically designed to expand in HUMAN-shaped critters, which means thin-skinned, thin muscle layer, and relatively shallow organs. One of those would probably pancake before making it through the fat layer in a bear.
Penetrating rounds are generally considered to be the ticket for big game - hard cast flat points, fer instance.

eh, no. the .44 magnum will give me time to get to my rifle, as i said. .45-70 will do nicely for followup. if needed.

was just reading an article on proper hunting of polar bears. seems an alaskan woman took one with .22 :> don't mess with her ;)

I agree. Hollow point rounds on large game is a bad mistake.
I would rather use FMJ for head shots.
45-70 Buffalo bore rounds would be better.

For those of us without the luxury to bear arms (pun intended), I carry a big knife because it's better than a pointy stick. I've grown up in black bear and big cat territory, and have had numerous standoffs with black bears. I have seen first hand what works and what doesn't: shooting one with a paintball gun works, throwing a shoe at one doesn't...it will also eat the shoe, though a bucket will stop one from advancing for a few moments as it ponders the meaning of a bucket...anyways If I were to be attacked by either, I'm sure I would come out shredded if I came out at all, but I'd rather go into it with 7+ inches of sharpened steel on my fist than a rock. I also carry bear-spray and a bear-scare/flare kit when I'm going off the beaten path, if I could have a .357 on my hip or in my bag, I would. If I were venturing into the true wilderness, where I was going to be left completely to my own devices, I would pack the heat regardless of the law, as mentioned earlier, better to take a fine than end up bear/cougar poop. As it is though, If I'm in a provincial campground with families and kids everywhere, I'm still strapping the BK7 on my hip anytime I leave camp.

Or 7.62x54r, basically a higher power 30-06.
A Mosin-Nagant platform M44 carbine should do quite nicely for bear, especially loaded with standard Russian milsurp ammo. That stuff will blow the whole head of the bear off and quite possibly fracture your shoulder, I'm sure.

a M-G is no worse than a shotgun shooting slugs imho, but it will pack a punch and blow nice holes into large mammals. 5 rounds :>

i think i'd rather have an 8 round shotgun with slugs, or a KSG with 14 slugs, though tricker to operate under duress perhaps.

perhaps a compact folding AK47? 30 rounders, with easy reloads. 2-3 might piss off a bear, but 10-15 will certainly make it ponder life before it dies ;)

If I was toting an AK platform rifle (unless it's a Dragunov) in bear country, I'm packin' a full 75 round drum.
Why not? Bumpfire, tear the bear to ribbons.

nah, practice control. for the other two bears :)

Plus with a Mosin u get a 18'' poky stick for the end!!!!

makes a 51/2 foot spear if ya run out of ammo

if it was me it would be a combo on a 12ga w/ some sluge and a semi auto 308 for the house

and a full size glock 10mm ... wildcat with double tap 40 super in it Ballistics : 1450fps / 841ft.lbs. - Glock 21 6" barrel
1400fps / 784 ft lbs 1911 5" barrel that with full size 15 rd mags ... and an extention maybe from kriss or magpul to 30 rds for situations when you need to be subtle
