Why do office people freak?

Here in the Netherlands there are very high restrictions on carrying guns, so almost no one carries a gun. But, recently the police of Amsterdam reported that there are shooting incidents quite often in their city and this is probably not very different in other big cities. I think it's quite simple. Criminals who want to carry and use a gun or want to use knives as weapons don't mind the laws. So gun and knife laws primarily hit normal people, maybe they make it criminals a bit harder, but they certainly don't stop them. A lot of politicians, both on the left wing (socialists) and right wing (liberals), have the illusion that if you ban "everything", the world will become safe.

They have that same illusion everywhere. :jerkit::rolleyes:

All that BS started back in the 60's and it's gotten worse ever since and will continue to get worse until they wake up. :jerkit:

Our company policy says you can be terminated immediately for "Possession of a weapon (i.e. gun, knife, explosives, etc.) on company property including in a vehicle or on themselves or in lockers."

So I gave up my Griptillian, and went to a Vic Super Tinker. Like someone above said, no one (even sheeple) seems to bad an eye when you pull out a SAK, but you take out a lock blade, and they lose their little mind.

The thing that bothers me, is that think they can fire me for what is in my vehicle...didn't Weyerhauser just lose a lawsuit to their former employees (with legal support from the NRA) for doing this? Some of the guys had long guns in their vehicles to go hunting before or after work, and they were terminated.

the terms conservative and liberal are generally misused in the states.

For sure, although Im ignorant on US politics.
It's just that I've seen liberalism left sided, although how can you define free mindedness? Could be anything anywhere..

Last company I worked for had a written no weapons policy. This was in a construction setting mind you where you simply must have cutting tools at a minimum. Then I find out half the people there including the owner carry guns and basically had a don't ask don't tell policy for those. Sometimes the written policies are for the lawyers and the real unwritten policies are for everyone else. If, God forbid, I ever end up working somewhere where they prohibit knives or guns and they actually search people and all of that, I can assure you it would be only so long as it would take to find a job elsewhere. I would then quit without notice when I had a better job and in the meantime I'd do the minimum I could do without getting fired until I found greener pastures. If you're not going through a metal detector though or otherwise being searched I'd suggest not using the pocket clip altogether and just carry more discretely in a knife-hostile setting.

Keep the politics out of here. The rules are clear. The infractions will also be clear.
A reasonable person should be able to understand why politics are not welcome in the knife discussion forum

That bothers me too. How would they know? They don't have a right to search your car.

In general Office people live in their own little boxes and until something gets their attention they walk around with blinders on.

In other words they are scared of everything except their cell phones and coffee cups.

Yes sir, Im disgusted and sick by the political talk I've babbled at other forums. Bladeforums is almost like escapism for me.

Its happend to me before. About 10 years ago, or so? Except it was an old plain endura. Ironic huh?

I've never had a problem in my office, except for one old lady that always looks a little nervous when I use my pocket knife. I think that has to do with me being kind of a young person though, not so sure she trusts the younger generation with "weapons". Can't say I blame her though, I wouldn't trust half of my friends with a small SAK.

I just stay within the states legal limits and avoid unnecessary knife using (i.e. don't use your pocket knife at lunch if there is a kitchen knife 5 feet away). However, if I need to open a box or package, there is no hesitation busting out the blur or bm710. The fact that several other people who work there carry knives with no incident probably helps, not sure though.

I work in a bakery so it's never really been an issue. we have dozens of knives laying all over the place, all shapes and sizes. I bring in whatever my daily carry happens to be and nobody thinks a thing of it, and I have a d'allara and a meaner stashed in my office desk. I have had a few looks while using a knife in public, but I generally chalk it up to either envy or bitterness caused by a lack of good socks.

There's a lot of things I can't do at the office that I can do at home and on the weekends. Sporting a big blade is just one of them, same as wearing jeans, and saying the F word as often as I please. So, I put a Delica or Mini-grip down in the pocket, and just be a little discreet about using it. It's really not that big a deal. I'm not at work to express my individuality, I'm there to do a job and make a living.

You know what, that is a really good way to look at it. I think that's what I'm going to start doing. I work to live, not live to work. It's a means to an end. ;)

Good idea mate.

They freak because most of them NEVER have been in the Military, or even out in the Country for that matter. They think the country is the park. Most people are raised by wimp parents, go to school with wimp Left Wing Teachers all the way through College. People today are a bunch of wimps for the most part who don't have a clue about anything except how to text and talk on the Cell phone and play office politics (Stab you buddies in the back to get promoted) and cheat on their spouses because they are bored. Most never had a real job that required real work. They drive like total idiots because they are in a hurry to get to work because they are running late. They left late because they were taking too much time trying to primp then are held up at the (Insert Coffee Place here) to get their morning coffee. Then they drive like a total maniac while texting or talking on the phone while drinking their coffee and eating their breakfast while putting on their makeup. By the time they get to work late they are all keyed up.

So after all of that seeing any knife would scare them since they are already worried and on edge about everything and parinoid anyway.

Dude, you are so on track it's crazy. I've felt like that for a while now. I was born in 1973 and it seemed to me that 'most' kids born in the mid 80's or later seem to think the world owes them a living and are pretty 'slackerish'.

Good post man!

I have said that to a lot of people too that let their jobs take over their lives.

I always separated my Job from my home life completely.

This all came about when fat, divorced, humorless women at the office - who are incredibly unhappy and miserable at their station in life - thought it would be swell if everyone at the office were unhappy too.

So they started b*tching about everything conceivable in the workplace. Its what psychologists call transference. And their spineless, metrosexual male bosses acquiesced and did not tell them to shut up.

So now, normal people are forced into a defensive posture every time fatty goes ballistic when a tiny Vic Executive is deployed on a manila folder. And it all started when no one told her to shut up in the first place.

Sometimes the truth hurts. But facts is facts.

The foregoing does not necessarily represent the views of Bladeforums, its owner, moderators or members. Though it might.
