Why do office people freak?

Most people are not "knife" people.

They're not used to seeing someone carry or use a common pocket knife. I'm sure some get a little startled when they see one out in public or in the work place.

I refuse to carry a knife clipped to my pocket at work [semi-professional office environment]. Instead, I use SAK's because because they have the perception of being more of a "tool" than a "weapon." Kinda like a multitool. And if anyone does ask why I have it, I can just default to the old "well, I used to be a Boy Scout.... guess it's just a habit to always have a Swiss army knife on me."

No attention is good attention. YMMV

What you say makes a lot of common sense. Unfortunately common sense is sorely lacking in corporate policies.

So the only solution for me is to find something that rides down in the pocket comfortably.

A lot of dress pants come with a cell phone pocket down inside one of the front pockets. What we need is a similar pocket for knives. I wonder if 5.11 tactical gear makes a dress slack?;)

I've been in the Trades for 35+ years, I've carried a knife/knives my entire career, even while workin' for the Government at the Court House I always had a knife, hell we used to make homemade cannons and shotguns at work.

All ya need is a job where knives are part of your daily job or be discreet. :)

You could always sew a little pocket down one side of the main pocket. You could do it with a needle and thread and just sew the pocket together for a couple inches and make it the size of the knife you plan on carrying.

I thought about doing exactly that! everyone I told thought I was nuts. I ended up just doing IWC.

I've got a couple pair of 5.11 cotton khaki slacks that I wear to work. They got secret pockets all over the place.

You get reminded how foreign knife carry is to some people in an office. A couple months ago I took out one of my office knives to open a package of coffee. It was a Canal St. Ring knife. If you're not familiar, it a little pen knife with sub 2" blade and nail file. Smaller than your pinky finger when closed. There is no more innocuous looking knife in the universe. Anyway when I took it out to open the coffee one of my male coworkers see's it and says "Whoa that looks dangerous". Words failed me.

Threads like these make me thankful that I work in a knife friendly workforce. Most of the office carries knives, and almost all of the warehouse workers carry knives. I've converted 4 of my coworkers to carry knives and half of the upper management carries S60V Blur blems, the very knife I used to convert all my coworkers. I'm sorry you guys don have the same policies. I've never been frowned upon for carrying a folder, though my G10 Tyrade is the largest I've ever carried in the office, so I guess that isn't too intimidating as long as I can deploy cut and reclip before they know what has happened. :D

I remember at my old job I was moving boxes and my knife fell out of my pocket. My boss gave me a stern look and told me to never bring that knife again. I brought I different one from then on. :D

It's ok ,a sharp pencil is defense/offense enough.........consider something like the keyton,is not a weapon,to most won't seem like one.Is very good at,well prying,and in a fist is dangerous.

I live in Texas, and while there are some things not to like, the knife attitude is not one of them. Every other pocket has a clip in it. I do some sales and the guy I called on today had a Kershaw clip showing. This was not a worker bee, it was the Purchasing Manager. I carry a Spyderco Military, full-size Manix, etc all the time and nobody really cares.

Most of the clips showing are gas station trash, but that is a different problem

Having a knife (tool) and using fire are the two most primal things to us as human beings, we have used them since time immemorial, and yet they are two things that the general wimp fears more than most. Also both completely illegal in my neck of the woods (UK). Its a very sad state of affairs indeed, and I certainly don't see it getting any better.

We need to socialize these wimps to knife use. They need to get used to seeing the constructive and law-abiding use of knives in every day life.

Fire is now illegal un the UK? Lol.

Only resistance ranges and electric cars?

Actually... we now have some pending cell phone legislation in OR. I'll be interested to see how that plays out.

People chattering away on the phone as they pilot their suburban assault vehicles around town scares me quite a bit more than anything I can recall having seen done with a knife. I wonder if I'm a cell sheeple, given that I almost always carry a knife, but have never owned a cell.

A case went to court not too long ago with a man with dagger, it was a double edged dive knife. The court found him not guilty and said that if the knife had a purpose other than a weapon it was ok... score +1 for reality.

I recall a court case I read about here in NZ. A man was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon - a SAK. It went to court and the judge inspected the evidence, compared it to his own SAK and ruled that a SAK such as a judge might have in his pocket to cut his apple during lunch didn't qualify as a concealed weapon - case dismissed. I think the police must have been looking for an excuse to make an arrest.

I wonder if I'm a cell sheeple, given that I almost always carry a knife, but have never owned a cell.

Isn't that the opposite of a sheeple? Sheeple = sheep + people = people that follow the herd and don't think for themselves. Sheeple have cellphones, but not knives, if you carry a knife but not a cellphone then you have two unsheeple characteristics.

BTW

You guys are nuts for carrying weapons on you - I would never do such a thing. I do have some multitools though. Admittedly the Victorinox Cybertool does have 2 blades, but it is just a multi purpose tool. And of course my Leatherman Wave also has 2 blades - but it is still just a tool. Then there is my Leatherman K502x - but it is OK, it only has one blade. ;)

+1 on that one.

IMO Cell Phones are the worst invention man has ever made.

I was just in a major accident about a month ago when an idiot ran a red light and shoehorned the car I was driving.... He was on the phone..... :jerkit::rolleyes:

I see about half the people driving with a cell in their ear and it's getting worse all the time.

As stated, that's probably true.

My point is that I'm relatively unfamiliar with cell phones. I understand how they work, I've even used them for communication, data analysis and photo-documentation - but I don't own or carry one. So I'm not complacent about it being safe (normal) to talk on one in the car.

Familiarity breeds comfort.

I hope Gadgetaholic's comments were tongue in cheek.

IMO, he is making a joke. Considering every acceptable tool has one or more blades.
