Why Do People Say Lynn C. Thompson Is Controversial

See, that's the disconnect we have right there.

I really don't consider my knife as a weapon. I'm not trying to disguise the fact, I just don't have any interest in using a knife in a fight. I carry a gun for my defense and a knife for chores.

Sure, if need be I'll use a knife to defend myself, just like I would any other tool.

And at that point, anyone who has a problem with the small, 3" fixed blade I normally carry is just irrational.

I don't see the disagreement. I feel the exact same way. Of course, I can't always plan to use a gun to defend myself because of other people in the periphery, over penetration, etc. In that case I want a potent knife. I think you'd be surprised at the number of people that wig out over a 3" folder.

I just got done watching a Cold Steel DVD that came to me in the mail unsolicited. It featered the owner Lynn Thompson. I now realize its already been said by many but I just have to say it again. I tried to find a fresh post to say it but couldnt so here it is.

I have three points I want to make:

First, all of what they do with thier knives could be done with an infomercial knife set and a sharpend pry bar.

Second, Lynn Thompson portrays himself as a martial artist that trains 16 hours a week. I am a lifelong martial artist and there is no way that someone training at an even moderate intensity level 16 hours a week would look like him.

Third, his hunting videos are vile. I am no PETA person and I have hunted Boar and Deer but what kind of "man" goes and pays what is basically a game preserve so they can kill leopards. Not to mention a kangaroo. I am fine with aboriginal tribes hunting them but what kind of American would hunt a kangaroo?

In my opinion he has some serious issues and instead of dealing with them he video tapes them and sends them unsolicited to the masses. He is the polar opposite of Ernie Emerson. I am afraid to open my mailbox now. Someone please make him stop.

Lynn is a hunter....he hunts at the all you can eat buffet. I'm glad I haven't received one of those stupid dvds in a good while. They are quite idiotic. The growing stupid of America is the reason cold steel is in business. They shame the knife world. Knives are tools, not the deadly weapons CS portrays them as.

Phil,

I believe you are missing the point. A knife can be used as a weapon, but by definition it is a tool. To call it only a weapon polarizes the issue. Cold Steel's marketing includes such catchy lines as "will crush bones like dry twigs and pulp flesh into jelly". The graphic nature of the act doesn't need to be explained to those who have trained to use them in such a capacity. It's over the top, and asking to be used in a Supreme Court case.

Exactly my issue with Cold Steel. There is nothing wrong about stating that a knife is meant for tactical applications, but there are plenty of other companies such as ZT, Strider etc. that are known for tactical blades and yet they don't label their knives as mutilating weapons. Don't get me wrong, Cold steel makes good knives but I have only owned four and currently own two because I personally believe for the money, there are much better knives available. They're just not high-value.

The leaf shaped blade is hollow ground from imported Japanese AUS 8A Stainless (instead of the cheap steel used by our competitors)

The sharp corners of the edge will easily pierce the thickest skull and the razor sharp edge will shear through flesh and bone like it was white bread. Plus due to its substantial weight and straight handle, it's easy to throw with great accuracy and is sure to explode any target with the most violent effect.

Am i missing out on anything by refusing to by Cold Steel products, on the grounds that Lynn C. Thompson is a chore of a human being?

Gah, I started reading this thread and couldn't stop. Just one of those things that you know you shouldn't keep doing it, but you can't stop yourself. Anyways, I thought after reading 19 pages I had to post.

I loved the early on debate on the perspective of a knife. I agreed with a lot of points from both sides. I think a knife is so versatile it is completely fluent between a tool and weapon. Some people lean one way or another, I think everyone is on the same boat, we love knives. We use them daily. Should we advertise knives as man killers? I don't think so. However, I don't think we should hide from knives being viewed as weapons. This doesn't mean I am gonna flash my knife every chance I get. I would actually prefer not to let a stranger aware that I carry a knife. I just think discretion should be used.

As far as LT, I lean on side of not approving of his "solid proof" vids. I just think they are over the top. I dont mind things like strength or rope test, but stabbing a car or, more specifically, slicing meat are a little vulgar. Just my opinion.

On the other hand, I actually like my experiences with CS knives. I think for the money they have been quality product. Which I can't say all cold steel products are high quality, that would be a hasty generalization. I have had very limited experiences with CS products. I have owned three Cold Steel knives, all were great products.

I just want to say though. Rumbling through all the garbage there have been some very high quality post from people. Good debate early on, phil and jcrud. Kudos.

He gives a huge 'HIIIYAAA', chops a pant-leg stuffed with pork chops, and then gets this look on his face that reminds me of an infant taking a crap. The ominous, red-faced stare of a giant toddler captivates the viewer like no other fat guy can.

Now that's some funny shzt!:D:D

That's very funny and very true. I trained for 27 years and when I was training I looked nothing like him. I stopped training several years ago and I'm in the worse shape of my life and I still look better than he does. I wonder what discipline he trains in that would make hime or better yet allow him to look the way he does?

i don't care how Lynn Anderson markets his knives,i know it makes me feel bigger n better n safer with a solid knife or two on my person, being cold steel,BM,SPYD.,or whatever suits me and my pocket.Living in a country with one off the highest crime rate in the world.Carrying a knife makes me FEEL safer.

He gets to eat all the meat in the leather jacket,he is just salivating for his prize, when the camera shows his face after slashing the crap out of it.

Who the heck is Lynn Anderson?
I think LT has 10th degree blackbelts in Kung Pao chicken and Tae Kwan fried dough. And a brown belt in hoo flung poo.

My biggest turn off to Cold Steel knives is that for the knife buyer they make it sound like they have a magical heat treatment for AUS 8 steel. They talk about edge retention as well but let's get real. I do like the locking mechanisms they have came up with though

You guys best be careful knocking Lynn Thompson and cold steel Knives!!!!

Lynn will hunt you down and....................................eat you!!
