Why do protestors always have a fire going?

Oh jeez...you guys would take anything I say serious, eh? It was humor :D

Personally I could care less if they burn fires or burn their own houses down. I just think it's a talking point that most street protests I have seen (in person or otherwise) in foreign countries almost always have a fire or two going. Maybe it's just the magic of fire while there's no TV around to watch, maybe they're all cold, maybe it really started out as a block party hot dog roast and someone got pissed because they ran out of hotdogs and started a riot. I bet that's it. I bet that the fire came first and someone got pissed and started a protest around an innocent fire. I say we ban fires, thus all protests will cease.

[" Why do protestors always have a fire going?
Just caught a glimpse of some street protest going on in France and yet again there is a fire raging in the background. Is is written in the protest rule book somehwere that anytime you protest in the streets you have to start a fire? Just curious."]

Sorry, but I disagree. There have been plenty of race demonstrations/riots in the U.S., and most of them have proceeded without fires.

Dude, I was merely making a joke.

Well, if any of you are familiar with the G20 "protest" that occured in toronto this year..

They found a "peaceful protestor" with body armor, and a backpack full of bricks, molotov cocktails, a large axe and gas mask.

If that doesn't have peace written all over it.... :D

The axe probably isn't for what you might think. They use it to smash sidewalks apart so they have an endless supply of bricks.

Ok Jeff, I have your reason.

This all goes back to some deep caveman instincts. Fire has long amazed simple minded individuals. Fires can be lit at protests for one of 2 reasons.

1. The fire is lit by a protest to assert his or her dominance. The only way for another protest to assert their dominance is to build a bigger fire.

2. Fire is lit to by protester in an attempt to draw other week minded people to the protest. This is similar to bugs being attracted to lights.

The Press probably waits until they have a dramatic angle including a fire before taking the picture. Fire is more exciting. Maybe they just photoshop some fire in for effect.

But the fact remains there's still a fire. Maybe the press started it.

So wait. These people are having a riot because they have raised the retirement age...to 62? I should be so lucky to retire at 62. I am looking at 70 probably.

Maybe they are starting fires because at 62...you'd still be young and spry enough to jump through one

Maybe look at it this way:

Why do the press always show you a picture with fire in the background?

There were a million people protesting in France the other day, did they all immediately start fires?

MMnnn, could it be that we're supposed to associate the right to protest with lawlessness?

Yip - it's media agenda setting. And the journalist probably provided the matches and marshmallows

given how the police rough up innocent by standers and the press, a protestor had better be able to take some damage ;)

though apparently having/wearing a gas mask is consider lawful evasion/etc so there you go ;)

The real question should be, "Why does raising the retirement age 2 years equal rioting?"

Really France? REALLY?

Could a fire be an implied threat? i.e. "We are not above arson so if you ignore our protests you might find up burning your stuff down!!!!!"

Didn't the French once take things a bit further when the privileged elite ignored the complaints of the unwashed masses?
