Why do so many people on this forum dislike sog

Well, for the sake of all those SOG fans there and SOG as well, it is hoped that their new Pendulum folder will not be a flop.

@bierkameel my sog aegis locks up solid with no blade play and does not feel cheap , it does feel light though. And thats coming from a guy who loves heavy knives with full steel liners. Note:close it by pressing the back of the blade on your thigh just like any lock back.

My sog aegis locks up solid and has no blade play. And you close it by pressing the back of the blade against your thigh like you would a lockback.

I've had problems with their marketing, false advertisement, and employee idol worship of the owner.
The folders are sub standard. No warrantee on the sheaths. I will never purchase another SOG.

I have something to say:

I used to hate SOG with a passion........why you ask? Because the twitch II has 23 freaking pieces, why dose that matter? Because I took mine apart (stupid wasn't it..) and the big problem is when you try and put it back together with the springs in place holes don't line up an------ rant over you get the idea.

But I got it back together two days ago (vice grips and C-clamps) and now I have to say I like it! Still over priced, and could be a little simpler......but I think there good knives and I'm sorry for my mild SOG bashing...

Peace out!

The reason I don't own any SOG is that in my opinion they overpriced considering the blade steels they use. They make a few products that to me are appealing at first glance and seem fairly priced....until I see the blade material.

I do want a Gov tac though.

I don't like them because of their "SOGZilla" Endura copycat, plus I'm not a fan of the Arc lock or assisted opening, or some of their folders where they have to mold SOG into the grip.

However, the MAIN reason I don't like them is because I find most of their folding knives are extremely ugly and tasteless...

Im not a fan of the wag that sog markets there knives. LEO/Military quality knives? Not even close.

I owned a twitch 2 once and the assisted action got bound up and the knife became usless after about 4 months. I have seen 3 other SOG twitch 2's in my day. all of which had the same problem. Plus i personally hate their aus-8 (or almost any aus-8 for that matter) and find it to either dull super quick on folders, or chip out like crazy on machetes after normal use.

However all of this said, i wouldnt bash someone for buying a sog, but also would never recomend them or try them again.

I dislike SOG because...

1) they always use cheap steels like AUS-8
2)my SOGs have always had bladeplay
3)I hate the fact that they're now trying to copy GOOD brands like Spyderco and Benchmade
4)There cheap arclocks have failed on me a couple of times
5)They over price some of there knives for what they are.

Can't really agree with much of this. The AUS-8 steel used in my Flash II takes a great edge and holds it for a long time. My Visionary II in VG-10 came wicked sharp right out of the box,
and the ArcLock, while not as smooth as the Axis on my Rittergrip, has functioned perfectly with no hint of failure. Neither have had a HINT of bladeplay. I think this represents
the kind of feeling many people have for Cold Steel; the good products they DO have are overshadowed by an undeserved negativism for the whole product line.

I have used a SOG Seal 2000 on a deployment to Iraq. One of the reasons I decided to learn about different metals was because of SOG's inability to stay sharp. I could put a hell of an edge on it but after one or two uses it would be dull again. My K-Bar (which cost $20 less) was harder to sharpen but would hold an edge for a few months before it would need a touch up. I still have my SOG; I keep it around as beater knife. SOG- good for diving, bad for combat.

I've got a SOG Seal Team Elite and a SOG Seal Pup Elite, both of which I purchased when I first started collecting,
and both have just made it above the floor of what I am willing keep around (for example a Gerber LMF II was returned).

The Seal Team Elite, being rather imposing in a Rambo sort of way, lives in my nightstand; I sincerely hope that I never drop it on my foot in the night.

The Seal Pup Elite I still consider to be a nifty if somewhat quirky "outdoors" type blade in my collection.

I've no use for any of their folding knives, nor am I likely to ever purchase another of their fixed blades in the future,
theres is simply too much out there that I find infinitely more interesting.

I have a few twitch folders that are decent but the only SOG that I really like is the seal pup. It's a good small blade. I just happen to have the older model that's made in Japan. I'm all Esee now and one becker.

in a few small sentences.

Every single locking knife I've owned by them or handled has frightened me. (lock rock etc)

Customer service and or responses I've witnessed were your standard company backpedal (lets make wild conjecture and bs to cover things or avoid questions)

In all fairness, I've seen reps from many other companies take shots and fire right back, Sog's responses have seemed to be very, VERY bob and weave.
But hey, wtf am I right?...

I liked my aegis and trident but I didn't think they were worth what they cost both around 50. I think for cheaper assisted knives Kershaw is probably the way to go. I know one thing... nutnfancy hypes up sog to no end.. ultra lightweight tactical folder.. I wouldn't trust my life to that only plastic handled riddled with play knife.. I would to my 20$ Byrd cara cara though, that has done play after a lot of hard use but that long still wouldn't fail. I put sogs quality of their assisted knives to that of Smith and wessons assisted blade

They sent me a brand new leather (upgrade) sheath for my eod powerlock. No questions asked.

A lot of people may sneer but I note that SOG folding knives seem to have much lower customer ratings on Amazon than other knife companies including Kershaw, Benchmade and Cold Steel. The commonest complaint for their folders seems to be blade play when open but too many other problems are mentioned too. This blade play is so commonly mentioned that I suspect that there is an inherent design, assembly or materials choice problem with their folding knives.

At the same time the lockup on my relatively new Trident Tanto is solid, at least so far. It is not comfortable though and the virtually all plastic construction feels cheap and IMO the cord cutter is useless. The Slim Jim XL I was silly enough to order, despite the Amazon reviews, is a sick joke of a knife. It reminds me of the photos I have seen of the stamped sheet steel gun that GM made for dropping to the resistance in Europe in WWII. Crude, basic and intended for assasinations and immediate disposal after use.

Are all of you guys members of a SEAL Team or something? What are you doing with these knives? Batoning a folder is not good practice. Use a hatchet. Just kidding, but really are you just putting them thru hell for research or what?

A friend of mine has a SOG Trident. The lock on it stopped holding any weight. If you put a couple pounds of pressure on the blade the lock fails. I haven't owned any SOGs but my friend's knife has scared me off from ever buying one.

a couple of weeks ago I bought three sog vulcans two were so late in lockup the arc lock was hitting the washers and both had up and down bladeplay plus the blades had different shapes because the grinds were so bad. third one is perfect of my so I kept it and is one of my favorite knives but come on two out of three I dont think so no more sogs for me.
