Most will say for the utilitarian side of thing's. I for one use my knife maybe 2 or 3 times a day so it's minimal. I look at it as confidence knowing I have the ability to cut whatever needs be. I've also realized how much sexier a photograph looks with a blade in it. Take the poll and give your reasons.

IF YOU VOTE FOR DEFENSE OR TACTICAL USE THAT INCLUDES UTILITY!

For me personally, I always liked having something in my hand. When I was younger, it was pens, so I guess as I grew older the step-up to folders was a natural evolution :)

You can take the (son of a) farmer out of the fields but you can't take the fields out of the (son of a) farmer.

I voted for just utility. I can always find something I need to use my knife for. It's also nice to know I have something I can protect myself with. I would of picked utility and cool but knives are frowned upon where I live. Also it's just something to keep me occupied. Whenever I'm somewhere I can fondle my knife, I do.

utility and defense, why is that not an option?

Thats what I was thinking. I revolve my EDC knife choices around what will be good for utility, but also be adequate enough in an emergency defense situation.

what the hell does "defense/tactical" mean? whats a "tactical" use of a knife?

youre laying on a tree branch with a knife, waiting for your foe, and then BAM you javelin him with you knife.

Thats why I carry...

That's what men do, they carry knives for every day tasks that require an edged tool. Sometimes several chores are needed, sometimes none.

I carry a knife because I never know when I might come across a steak that needs slicing. And, in my experience, that opportunity comes up often.

Utility and fun/cool factor... Not that carrying a blade makes me cool LOL. ;):D

as do women ;) (at least the ones in my household do)...beats the heck out of tracking me down when they need something cut

I carry a knife to keep myself prepared for the inevitable zombie invasion. After seeing how easy it is to stab zombie skulls in The Walking Dead, I feel supremely confident in my ninja-like zombie fighting abilities.

I grew up on a small hobby farm, so it's always been a utilitarian thing for me. I've carried #8 Opinels for a while, not exactly the kind of tactical flippers I see discussed a lot. It's the same reason I carry a lighter in the same pocket with the knife even though I don't smoke: I may not always use it every day, but I find occasion enough in the week to need it to justify carrying it on me instead of needing it and being with out it. I work in a wood shop, so it's primarily cutting stretch wrap, plastic banding, opening boxes or packaging, etc. During the weekend may need to cut a chicken nugget in half for my boys, or split a treat between them, something like that.
