I use one daily at work. I work in a lab and use a dodo to open boxes and pick at lables covering stuff. It's very useful there. It's wierd because that is the most userful blade (for me) at work. Outside of work it's practically useless. Mostly because that ball lock gets gunked up.

I have various and sundry folders I rotate for EDC. I have many fixies too but I don't edc them.

I don't know how people get through the day without needing a knife for something. To open a clampack or box. To open a bag of stuff. To slice an apple or other food item. To cut tags off clothes.

I would hate to have to use one to defend myself but I clip a leek to my pocket when I walk or go to the store. I don't edc those because of that slick handle. And I don't want to ruin the nice point. I put grip tape spots on them though. I have an endura that also gets guard duty too. I might pick up a police someday.

I have a couple spyderco salts that are my lunch knives. The pacific salt is almost like a folding santuka. I can put them up "wet" if I have to because of the H1 steel.

I don't think so. I could choose to fumble around trying to, say, open a stubborn plastic package, maybe use my teeth or try to bash it open on a rock, and I'd get it eventually. Or I can just use my knife and have a little civilized dignity. To me, that's style points... :)

Plus opening it with something nice like a rainbow leek, or a nice little damascus bladed number adds style. Style points also for flair in opening the blade, either by it being an auto opener, or by flicking it open.

Having to use two hands / involving fingernails in opening the knife loses style points.

I give myself style points depending on my selection. The fancier the knife, the more points. Nobody else really has to know, the style ozzes out of my pores, others can feel it even thought they may not know why. ;)

I can :D. I use my knives at work, but I would carry even if I didn't need them.
I love my blades, and I carry them simply because I love them..

*shrug*

My Dad gave me my first knife when I was six years old and every day since then I've had one in my pocket.

It's the most fundamental tool a man or woman can have. Tools, and the ability to use them are one of maybe the most important things that separate humans from animals. So I keep a tool with me at all times.

What I'm more interested is, as a civilized human being how some people can go without a knife?
To do things we do with our blades, what do they use?
Teeth? Nails? It's just like animals...

I've known some "sophisticates", They're proud of what they can do with their car keys.

Most will say for the utilitarian side of thing's. I for one use my knife maybe 2 or 3 times a day so it's minimal. I look at it as confidence knowing I have the ability to cut whatever needs be. I've also realized how much sexier a photograph looks with a blade in it. Take the poll and give your reasons.

IF YOU VOTE FOR DEFENSE OR TACTICAL USE THAT INCLUDES UTILITY!

Well that rather distorts the poll.

i voted for utility and style. It's the kind of thing that when you need it, it's what you need. I've used knives to cut myself out of trees after a fall (not ideal, but it's why now I only carry one hand openers), cut ropes that were about to become destructive during a storm, deployed a few times in some dicey situations and more than one dog attack, and everything in between. I see very few situations where if you need a knife, a car key is better... except maybe starting the car.

But if i don't have one on me, like when I'm sleeping, there is one nearby. when I'm out and about I have one. whenever I can legally, also have a handgun. same thinking, and that's a much better tool for SD.

however, I said style because really there are few things a $200 plus knife can do better than a $5 whatever brand, beside be better quality. for most of us, i think if we were really honest with ourselves we could do most everything we do with a blade with a $9 swiss army key chain knife. but where's the fun in that? I carry a nicer/more expensive knife because I want to, and it's worth it to me. I'm going to buy an auto knife of some sort just because I want to. and can. and this is a short life, might as well enjoy it, right?

I voted

"Utility and cool factor."

Because fondling wasn't on the list. I can't be the only who spends more time opening and closing their knives than actually cutting things. :D

Because a gentlemen is always prepared!!!! I have had a knife in my pocket since I was 12. My gramps gave me a spyderco clipit delica for helping him build a brick planter for some plants and that's when my knife obsession started. Still have that knife too now that he has passed it will sit in my safe forever

Put defense/tactical even though all the options apply. I honestly use my knife every day at work, a little Case or a balisong. For the 0.001% chance im in a dangerous elevator or other close fight, ive got a small fixed blade.

I carry one because I work as a carpenter and use them all the time to open up bundles of lumber and many other things on the jobsite

^^^ This. It's actually a standard comeback of mine, when someone is astonished to find out I have a knife with me (I don't advertise it), and they say, "why on earth do you have that?" I say, "you know those annoying plastic packages that are so hard to open?" "Uh, yeah" "Well, not for me they aren't."

Well, sure, if you're only using a $200 knife. I mean, you really haven't experienced opening a plastic package properly until you've done it with a $500 knife. And let us not even speak of the legendary package opening abilities that are to be found at the $800 price level.

Nothing like opening a package for a $200 knife with a $2200 knife :D

Since the first Caveman picked up a sharp rock or shell mankind's destiny was determined .
Utilising tools is what differentiates us from animals .
My knives are primarily tools , sure I spend to much money on knives and that's the vanity and individualism in me showing through , but no matter how expensive of flashy they are , they are still tools .

Nice! I've been meaning to ask - when you get to the $2200 level, are there trumpets when the package opens? And glowing light from inside the box?

First thing that happens is pictures of the invoice to email to my insurance agent.
