"Style points" and "Cool factor". Come on, really? That's a bit silly. Not that it matters, but if I had to guess I would say the creator of this poll is of a younger age. If anyone you know carries a knife for "style points" or "cool factor" they better be under the age for 18 because other wise that's pretty pathetic.

Carrying a blade is for utility and emergency situations. It can of course serve as a last ditch effort to defend your life if necessary.

Because a gentlemen carries a knife.

Also, because I feel an innate bond w blades that can never be replicated by my CCW. Something's that reaches deep down on the inside I can't explain with my head - only my heart. I always carry a fixed blade; sometimes small, sometimes a 5.5" Ratmandu IWB.

I don't think so. I could choose to fumble around trying to, say, open a stubborn plastic package, maybe use my teeth or try to bash it open on a rock, and I'd get it eventually. Or I can just use my knife and have a little civilized dignity. To me, that's style points... :)

The question I usually ask - especially to someone who is asking to use my knife - is "Why don't you carry a knife?" That seems to be the better question.

I've carried knives since I was 14 and I love them. I'm always finding a reason to use it, and it's always cool to compare knives with other blade nuts.

I just like having a blade on me so i know i can cut anything if i need to. Being able to open and close it when i'm bored is a plus too :p

I like sharp things. Hence, knives. They're also pretty useful. I voted for defense/utility

I would have voted all of the above but I voted utility and cool factor, nothing cooler then have a dope blade on your side, and that I use my knives quite a bit fishing and at work.

I've always been partial to the sentiment expressed by James Mattis (RIP, one of the wisest men ever to inhabit BF, long long ago) as the opening paragraph of his long-gone website, "Chai Cutlery":

The hairy person who first flaked a flint blade (perhaps to peel the fruit of the tree of knowledge) began our entire material civilization and made moral choices both necessary and possible. The "chai" in my logo (ch pronounced as on J.S. Bach or Loch Ness) is the Hebrew word for life, in case someone gets the wrong idea about what the purpose of the tool may be. The invention of the knife, marks the separation of humans from the apes, giving our species the ability to alter nature. It is as natural for a human to carry a knife, though one may have no immediate plans for cutting anything, as it is for a literate person to carry a pen, with or without any immediate plans for writing, or to wear a watch, whether on not one has an appointment to keep.

I carry a knife as a tool, because it is frequently useful and because I like to be prepared (like a Boy Scout), also because I have a fascination with and appreciation for well made tools and with the progress of invention and technology that makes the same basic tool continually better, but also because I see it as almost a totem, or talisman, signifying that I am a tool using animal, in much the same way that one wears a wedding ring not merely because it's pretty jewelry, but because it signifies to you a bond you share. And in some small way, I carry a knife as a remembrance of Mr. Mattis and the calm, levelheaded, enlightened and jovial spirit he imbued into the early days of this forum.

There's also a quote from the early days (I forget who said it first) that sums things up nicely: "If I leave the house without a knife it's because I've forgotten my pants."

Pocket jewelry that is functional and because of my felony, knives are the most effective self defense tool I can carry.

Assist in opening those pesky clam shell packages. While on the road most of our meals come from grocery stores. Helps a lot to cut open buns, slice cheese, tomatoes etc. Oh ! Yeah and that summer sausage.

Voted "utility" because I carry knives in case I need to "use" them to cut stuff. That's what you do with tools.

Note I said "knives" not "knife". I ALWAYS have at least 2, one to port and one to starboard because you never know which side you will need the knife on. Reaching across to the other side (pocket or hip) might not be an option. "Be prepared." is a scout thing for sure (Eagle here), but it's not just for scouts. Always plan ahead, and not for apocalyptic zombies eruptions.

Carrying/wearing anything to be "cool" or "for style" ?? Worthless reasons IMO.

For defense? Well, that is a "use", but that's only a really, really last ditch effort type of use. Things that go "bang" are much better than knives, although I realize than firearms are NOT an available option for some folks (where they live, who they live with, "legal situation", etc).

I have always carried a knife since I was about 14 (even in school) I feel naked without one. I use it to cut whatever I need I also like to have something to fiddle with in my hand when i'm bored. Plus it's nice to have beautiful knives I prefer to use them no matter what they cost I don't like safe queens. So I think there should have been a poll answer that was a mix of all of the above.

I voted for "utility". I conceal carry and almost never let anyone see my knife. I like a well designed, good quality knife, but that's solely for my own satisfaction. Not to impress anyone.

I carry a knife with me everywhere I go, a Spyderco UKPK, I carry it in a Maxpedition Fatty EDC organizer along with other stuff.
Nobody knows that I carry a knife and no one needs to know - until they want something cutting. ;)
