It depends if I am at work. The two knives I have on me while at work are there for utility only.

Outside of work is another story. Then it is for defense and utility.

It's a tool and I use many tools everyday. I don't think my requirements would necessarily fall into one of the above categories.

You can take the (son of a) farmer out of the fields but you can't take the fields out of the (son of a) farmer.

This. Raised on a family farm in the middle of no where.. Always carried a knife then.. Now that I am in the city I still feel naked without a knife. Still have a 4x4 too... Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Is that 4x4 lifted? got a can of copenhagen, blasting that trailer park pop? :p

I carry a knife to cut whatever needs cutting. It's that simple. Packages, food, sharpening the occasional pencil. Whatever needs cutting up to and including a bad guy if necessary. I also have my concealed carry permit so my main defensive weapon is my gun but the knife while primarily a tool is also always an option for SD

knives-in-nature,

Why the hell do you care why?

I don't mean to be abrasive, and am not in life but seriously why do you care why I do something?

'Cause sometimes I need to cut things. :) Honestly "cool factor" and "style points" have never been and would never be part of why. I don't even know how carrying a knife would add cool or score points, but whatever.

And defense? Nah. I carried a gun for several years--still have my permit--and never needed to defend myself against anything. I'm more of a danger to myself than anyone else is. ;)

Mostly utility. Habit plays a big part too. I feel naked if I leave the house without one. Even if I'm in a suit you can bet I'll have a knife tucked away.

I voted for Utility and Cool Factor, but it's definitely more than that for me, and I'm sure a lot of others will agree. It's all of the above, and then some. I work a job where I'm constantly cutting tape, cardboard, plastic, zipties, the works, I also walk to work at 4am and back home, so I need it for defense in case I have an "oh shit" moment and need to defend myself. Not just from people, but the neighborhood I live in has a troupe of feral cats that lives near my apartment complex, I'm not risking a potential attack without a weapon. All that, and knives are just cool, they're the reason I'm interested in metallurgy. I never knew there were so many types of steels and such, I always thought "steel was steel". Knives have taught me a level of respect for my tools that I didn't have before I started collecting and using them. I'm much more aware of my personal safety and the safety of others with a knife in my hand than I am with a "safety razor" that I'm given at work. And beyond all that, I've made friends through my knives, they're always interesting to some people and I've forged some lasting relationships that started with a blade. I can't be seen without at least one on my person anymore.

I didn't vote as none of the options fit well. Rather its a combination of all of the above in it and a few more. A knife is an extension of my body would be a better answer.

I didn't vote either.
I carry for peace of mind. I haven't started rotating the smaller knives yet (Delica, Ripple, etc) I guess this would be categorized as self-defense.
I have over a hundred knives, and I like to rotate about 60% of them for a couple days at a time. I would call this enjoying my collection/investment.
If actually need to cut something, I have a SAC Classic on my keychain, and a Mora in my Maxpedition work pack.
On the RARE occasion that I run into another production knife collector, it's always nice to have a "cool" knife to spur a conversation.

i voted utility use only, because my knives are my tools. My glock is my self defense.

Utility...Because cutting an apple (my preferred mid morning snack) with a .357 SIG round is awfully noisy in the office.

Depends whether you like apple slices or applesauce.:)

Being an old Eagle Scout, I still live by the motto "Be Prepared". A knife is part of that.

I have always stood by the notion that you should always have a knife. It has been a staple tool for both utility and defense for at least 2 million years that we know of. The feeling of having that tool at hand when you need it is great!
