why do you carry

I'm gonna go with the "warm and fuzzy" answer. I just really like knives. And to be honest with you, I could probably get by without one.

I've carried a knife ever since I was a young kid, around eight or so. I come from a family that hunted and fished on both sides, and everyone had one. I carried one in grade school all the way through college, and still carry one every day. I also have a couple of teen girls in my house, and it's amazing the things they're always cutting up in the name of making this or that; they both have SAKs, and my youngest asked for (and got) an Izula for Christmas this year. A knife is always good to have, but if you're a handy or crafty type person they're also a basic tool you need.

I carry three knives every day. I have been carrying at least one knife since I was ~12 yo, and I am now 58 yo. Can't teach an old dog new tricks...it's true!

Some of you said that you carry one or more knives daily, but you don't really need them in your day to day activities, that you carry them as "man jewelry", carry them to "fondle" them during the day, and that they are "a man's best toy". I am SO glad to find others like me! I might use a knife once every second/third day, but every day I pick up and strap on my fanny pack and among it's contents are two knives; a SAK or Leatherman Juice2, and a Spyderco Szabo. In my right front pocket I am currently carrying a Kizer 5401A2.

I last used a knife on Sunday 3/23/2014. It was my most often used knife, my Victorinox Fieldmaster, and the job was to clean under my fingernails as I sat in front of the tv watching "Law&Order". By my reckoning I will be using my knife again tomorrow, 99% chance it is the Vic.:)

I love this thread. Nothing but realistic answers. It defines this whole forum. People have answered tradition, utility, practicality, "warm and fuzzy", livelyhood, a tool, self defense, and just because they can. I agree with everyones answer here. I carry for all these reasons

Because I use a knife daily for even just simple task. Always better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it!

because it gives me options, it broadens the spectrum of things I can do. It's a tool, useful in several scenarios.

I've always had knives around in a desk drawer or toolbox, but that desk drawer or toolbox never seemed to be within reach when I found myself needing a knife. Although I never expected that an IT guy would be in so many situations where a knife was the appropriate tool for the job, that's where having an EDC knife has come in most handy. On top of that, since taking up hiking in recent years as well as a renewed interest in fishing, having a knife makes good sense.

There's also the defensive role, and although a handgun normally fills that, there are places (including work) where I can't carry. My usual office EDC knives aren't ideal for defense, but I have a couple that are, and those are the ones I carry when not at work.

My grandfather once explained to me that every other apex preditor in nature has the equivalent of a knife " built in" where Man does not, and therefore we must carry knives with us. I was 8, and carried a knife with me ever since - I can't be without one without feeling out of sorts.

This is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

Because Mr. Pickle needs a pal.

Because I am "that" guy. I am the mall ninja, surfing the web on the couch. :D

Nah not really. I grew up seeing my father carry a knife in a pouch on his belt everyday. So I just always thought that was what guys did. Carry a knife. It is a tool.

I carry a knife because it is a useful tool.
I use it regularly at work and every day at home.

I carry one because I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!

I've carried one since I was about eight, and feel naked with out one. Just haven't figured out how to carry one while I run through the neighborhood naked.
