"Why do you have so many knives!" how many have heard this?

To the OP, I think you have a much greater justification for many since you seem to actually use and also gift away as well. What could be more giving than giving a knife? 😆
Oh wait, not everyone is a knife nut. They aren't......until they are and they realize the knife they had at the time saved them in one form or another. Nonetheless nothing wrong with having a big collection under the glass too I suppose so long as (and this is just personal opinion) not taking more than 2 rare pieces because then you are just stealing from other fellow knife lovers who could otherwise get to experience the awesomeness of these particular knives.

To the general question from others, too many good answers already given couldn't top but to me the real question, the worse question is when this question comes from not your gf or your wife or friends and family or strangers but when it comes from within. When you start asking yourself this! Now a big box of pandora can be uncovered as this question could be never ending. To solve it though these past couple years I found two solutions not so easily followable and not proven 100 percent. A) every couple months re-evaluate collection and trim a few of those not being used (much). B) Spend less time on Bladeforums and other knife communities.🥺 I'll admit, neither are the most fun but they do have some small effect in eliminating the strength of the original question.

When I make a knife purchase, I always get the old, "What are you going to do with this one?" Or, "What's this one for?" To which I answer, "Cutting things ... but that should be intuitively obvious to even the most casual observer!"

There's one more, "Why do you need ANOTHER knife? Don't you have enough." To which I say, "Knives to me are like hearing, 'I love you,' to you. After you've heard it once, you know, but you still want more, and more, and more!

"When I need to hear, 'I love you,' I buy a knife."

I ordered 2 Buck 120s. Can't wait to get my hands on those. I also got a gift from the NRA for becoming a lifetime member. It's a large, engraved bowie with a display stand. But I haven't had time to take a close look at it. Maybe I'll do that later on now that I remembered.

I'm the same with knives, and at the last count getting towards 200 hammers.........
I do use lots of my knives & hammers though, the old ones are ornaments!
Poor image 🙄 sorry....

Great display. They mostly seem similar in style ... ???

Yes, these a a few ancient claw hammers I grouped together. I started years ago with auto body hammers, I had many before I even knew I was collecting them! Then came more & more, different types of hammers & styles......
I'm sure the knife folk here recognise this dangerous trend..... 😄
And still so many I don't have.... 🔨;)

I’ve never been asked.
Around here guns & knives are a culture people inherit. Quantities aren’t rare.
Relatives or friends, not from here, may fear triggering some deep problem by asking.
Practice your 1000 yd. stare and drool a little, they won’t ask again.

Cool rack idea, I need to build one for the hatchets I have racked side by side. Although space efficient that way (a dozen in about 17” hanging vertical), you can’t see anything but hafts and polls. And occasionally when I’m taking one down, another will fall down and scare the cat.

I suppose with so many knives, axes AND hammers, if someone were to ask "why so many" blunt trauma could be included in the answer as well as cutting & chopping.

Now that’s a handsome collection of hatchets. I’m especially impressed with the 6th one down, and those with hand carved straight hafts. Good work.

A couple of decades plus ago...
I'd get my kicks out of seeing how many knives I could carry at one time - and not "doubling up" by putting more than one per pocket.

It was so long ago, that I forgot how many. Might be a topic for a post eh?

Anyhow, when we would go to my wife's parents for Sunday dinner, my father-in-law used to get a kick out of it and ask me why I had so many knives. Then he'd drag out a old shoebox full of old slip joint folders he had collected during his life.
I wonder what happened to that box of knives when he passed away?
