why does spyderco use the outline of a tick for their logo?

At least thats what it's always looked like to me. their logo looks just like a tick or some other arachnid mite. unlike a lot of people i actually think spiders are alright, don't mind handling them and such, but ticks are still pretty gross. nasty little bloodsuckers. so what's the reasoning behind the logo? did they do it on purpose or do you think somebody didn't know what a tick looked like and by the time they figured it out it was too late?

Come on...(if this thread isn't an attempt at trolling, I don't know what is...)

Have you seen a tick in real life? There is a striking resemblance.

ETA: The reason it looks more like a tick than a Spider is because it is missing a noticeable divide between the thorax and abdomen. The one piece body of the tick resembles the logo more than the divided body of the spider. :)

If you pay close attention you will see that the logo has legs coming from the main body portion (abdomen) and a Spider does not. Just another thing that makes it resemble a tick more closely than a spider.

if thats trolling this forum has some pretty unusual standards.

this photo is just what came up first when i googled 'tick'. i wish had my arachnid book around because i swear i've seen some mites that look even more similar. you know, the more i think about it, it's pretty cool that they based their logo off a real arachnid instead of using some kind of stylized spider outline like every other spider decoration

Eh, with a stylized corporate logo it's pretty hard to argue that it's one thing instead of another. Heck, it could be a crab that suffered an unfortunate accident for all I know.

LOL! At the hands of an angry fisherman with a Spyderhawk no less.

I'm sure somewhere on this earth there's a spider that looks exactly like the logo. Stylized logos aside, spiders come in so many different varieties that don't always seem to conform to preconcieved notions of "spider shaped". Take for example this commonly found orb weaver, about the size of your pinky nail.

I had to use my knife at work one day and the lady I used it in front of asked me what kind of knife I carried. I work out in the "country". I showed her and the first thing she said is why is there a picture of a tick on your knife...LOL I just told her it is not a tick it's a spider and then I showed her the name of the knife.

A more distinct head/abdomen would probably clear it up. It still looks more tickish than spiderish. I think they could use some CQI on their logo to clean it up. I guess it doesn't really matter as long as they make great blades.
