why does spyderco use the outline of a tick for their logo?

I like it. It looks so fluffy

It's better than the Spike's Tactical attempt at a spider that basically looks like two schlongs

,
We needed a "cute" spyder. (our knives were the first "tactical" knives) One of our crew came up with the idea back in the early 80's. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Your logo is recognized worldwide, along with the hole in the blade. That's really all that matters.

Now that you mention it it does look like a tick, but I suppose I never cognitively associated it with a tick because the company name told my brain that it was an illustrative spider. Now it's one of those "can't un-see it" things...

If you stare at the Spyderco tick long enough, it turns into a spider.

This is akin to staring at a page of random dots and seeing the image of a naked woman appear.

It's subliminal mind illusion stuff. Very complicated.

I think it looks great and is a very recognizable logo. You know that it's Spyderco when seeing it and won't confuse it with another company and that is a big deal as far as company logos are concerned.

However, it would be interesting to see possibly an 'updated' 21st century version of the tried and true Spyderco logo.
I don't have the skills or program on my comp to pull it off but something along the lines of thinner and with a more defined double body would be cool to see.

EDIT: Nevermind on the last part. After searching 'spider logo' it's clear that there are a ton of different spider logos out there and they all seem to look very similar. The Spyderco logo is however 'different' and is like I said, immediately recognizable.

I don't think the logo has to be anotomically correct for us to recognize a fine knife company. I mean, the butterfly looks nothing like a bench either does it?

I just picked up one of the black military hats with the red logo. When people ask me about the logo, I tell them it's a Red Widow and wearing it always makes me want to sink my fangs into something.

I don't really care what it looks like. I think it's cool.
