Why doesn't everyone just have a small sebenza?

Being sarcastic (kind of)...
Just got a small sebenza 21 and now I can't (really) justify any other knife. So many of the expensive (grand or more) cool looking knives I've been lusting after just seem like self-indulgence now. Does a guy just have to admit it makes him feel cool to carry a custom emerson or strider? It can't really be for practical reasons. The sebenza blade is long enough, sharp enough, the knife durable enough, for anything I'm actually going to use it for. It's almost sucked the fun out of my knife lust. It's soooo boring but does everything I need. Do some of you come to terms with the fact that you just want a cool looking, somewhat rare knife for selfish reasons? Otherwise this sebenza is really all I need. But deep down I want an Emerson custom cqc-7 or ddc sng or...

I agree with you. The baby 'benza is a really outstanding knife. The perfect balance of cost and performance, IMO.

Even if I would consider spending that much money, the knife is too small to be very usable for an outdoor knife. I find the medium to large stockman or trapper knives along with a SAK do what I need. On a day to day basis the SAK is far superior for my use. I use the screwdrivers more than any other blade.

I have a couple of Senrenmu 710s and while I don't have a single complaint I find them too small to do much except opening packages or cutting string. A box cutter does all I need to do cutting cardboard.

Regards,
Jerry

A local gun shop was going O.O.B. and had three left. Needless to say, I should have bought them all. I regret it. Enjoy that knife. I tote an Unmum and love it, but I'd love to have a little slicer like that guy.

So many of the expensive ($100 or more) cool looking knives I've been lusting after just seem like self-indulgence now. Does a guy just have to admit it makes him feel cool to carry a Sebenza or a Klotzli? It can't really be for practical reasons. The Mini-Griptilian/Kershaw Leek/Spyderco Delica/Endura/lots of others blade is long enough, sharp enough, the knife durable enough, for anything I'm actually going to use it for.

Edit: For those that don't get the point of this post, what's not worth $1000 to you is easily worth it for someone else, and what isn't worth $400 for me (Sebenza) is easily worth it for someone else (you). Hell, I wouldn't buy a Sebenza if someone gave me $400 for free. I prefer thinner blades and handles that aren't metal.

:thumbup: Or, to put it simply, maybe I just don't want a Sebenza...:D

I've got a small Sebbie. EDCing it hasn't done a thing to quell my knife acquisitiveness.

My thoughts exactly Brutus. I do understand the feeling though. For me, at the moment at least, it's a 3" XM-18 wearing carbon fiber. It has really changed the way I view knives. It's a simple, practical, and though design. It works so well it's always in my pocket. Funny thing is, I originally bought it for cool factor. I never expected it to be my main beater, but it's just too useful, lightweight and size efficient to leave at home.

I guess everyone has to achieve their own knife zen.

+1 for Brutus...I have a BM 552 with Wilkins that won't even let me consider a CRK thats twice as expensive...that thing is perfect and, since I am a lefty, i won't don't even look at knives unless they have an Axis lock or some other ambi lock. But i agree with the idea that one could pick up an Endura for way under a hundred and it will do anything a $400 knife will do; you can't really justify a Sebenza on utility purposes. There is a selfish, flashy reason buying a knife over a hundred bucks. If we bought knives on utility alone, we would all be carrying mid range Spydercos and Kershaws.

...I get the point on the $100 thing. I have a $80 griptilian that does everything I need. The only thing I wonder (guess I'll find out) is if the blade will hold up as well as the sebenza. If it does..a mini-grip is probably all I need even though I'd feel cooler with a strider custom. Just trying to be honest with myself..

Why doesn't everyone drive a Ford Focus? It will get you from point A to B just as easily as a Subaru Imprezza, and you will even have enough left over to have a full tank of fuel all the time. Different strokes I guess. Some in the past have commented that there does appear to be a certain aire of knife snobbery at times associated with that brand and other mid tech knives. I own a large Insingo, Enigma, and an Umnumzaan. I will admit that I do not really use or carry those knives much (except the Umnumzaan). I love the knives, appreciate the simplicity of their design, the overall precision under which they are manufactured, and the history behind them.
However, some of us appreciate variety in blade steel. I really love my knives in S90V, CTS-XHP, CTS-20CP, CPM-M4, D2, M390, ELMAX, 440V, 1095, 1055, INFI, 52100, etc. There is also a lot to be said for edge retention. Speaking only for myself, I prefer trying exotic steels, new designs, and something I can really use and not feel bad about dinging up.

You are talking about that knife if it would be so cheap. :) Carrying a strider costs the same, it is just personal preference.

I think Brutus hit it right on the head, why not just use a Skyline or Flash 2 if all your looking for is a blade to get things done. It's because you like knives, a Sebenza does absolutely nothing for me, I look at a Strider SMF DGG with a digi blade my hands get sweaty . Theres never a reason besides personal enjoyment to own more than say... hell... four or five knives, and all of those can be bought very cheaply . I'm ashamed to admit it, ever sense I put my hands my first first ZT 300 I had to buy the whole 300 series...Twice... (My knife collection got stolen last year) not because I needed it.But because I love them. I can't even justify having it on me at work as defense because the Spartan beats it in every possible way. It's all in what you like, knives are the same as all other things you enjoy in life, it's easy to fool yourself and justify it as something you need. Just be proud and buy what you like because you like it.

+1 on this. Also, regarding the Small Seb in particular, I find it (and other small/"mini" knives like the Mini Grip) to be too small for my hands.

Price aside, the HT on one knife is much better than the other. Just like teh F&F on the other knife is better.

Just got a piece of obsidian and now I can't (really) justify any other knife. So many of the expensive (grand or $330) cool looking knives I've been lusting after just seem like self-indulgence now. Does a guy just have to admit it makes him feel cool to carry a Production Spyderco, Benchmade, or CRK Sebenza? It can't really be for practical reasons. The obsidian is long enough, sharp enough (I can sharpen it simply by chipping it, too! Sebenza can't even do that!), and durable enough for anything I'm actually going to use it for. It's almost sucked the fun out of my knife lust. It's soooo boring but does everything I need. Did you come to terms with the fact that you just want a cool looking, somewhat rare knife for selfish reasons? Otherwise this piece of obsidian that I found is really all I need.

Funny, you can replace Sebenza with anything.

This is another one of those, "I love this knife. Why doesn't everyone else love this knife too, to the exclusion of anything else?" threads.

I have no doubt whatsoever that this is a great knife; I do not fault you for loving it.

But Bladeforums has over 150,000 members. Why are you at all surprised, in any way, that with that size of a population, that people would have a variety of preferences?

Saying you really like a knife is an appropriate thing, we've all done it. Asking why everyone else doesn't share that smacks of fanaticism, at least to me.

This is true for just about any folder. If practicality had anything to do with our obsession with knives, it wouldn't be an obsession, and we'd only own one folder: a Tenacious or a Rat 1.
