Why doesn't everyone just have a small sebenza?

Starting to get it. Working through this in my own mind trying to justify..
My point is not that the sebenza is the best ever, just that it's good enough. So is my griptilian as it turns out. So I guess I just want more cool factor. A non-knife geek would see a sebenza and think you got it the drug store for $18. I had my eye on a used Dozier mammoth/Damascus that would have been a pleasure just to look at. Guess I gotta admit I'm not as practical as I claim/wish.

Just buy knives for you.

It almost makes you mad and proud at the same time to own some of the cheaper-mid level knives that truly excel and are nothing short of equal in utilitarian purposes. There are even so many US blade companies today providing quite a bang for your buck. I still have not found a 400+ knife that is truly superior in every way to my manix2 which I paid $68.00. I would literally put my life on the line re: that spyderco and a few others in the same + or - 120.00 range. CRK and Strider just to name a few and there are 10 others that do provide something for the value. Would I rather have a strider or a sebbie rather then a mannix2. Not for EDC. The whole idea for me re: carrying knives- is the fact that there is a good % I might loose my EDC in my pocket. Has happened before- and if im spending 100 bucks for a knife- I wouldnt even blink and just order another online that day if I lost it-or if it were stolen somehow. Now, unfortunately, I am the type of person who would dwell for a long time and be pissed at myself for loosing a 400 knife. It really is a paradox- because I almost get more enjoyment out of a 200 lionsteel sr1 or a 70.00 spyderco- and only fondly my safe queens with nice materials on the handle. Im too much of a wuss to ever hard use a knife that has desert ironwood, mammoth tooth, ivory or whatever the exotic materials. Bottom line is that the CRK probably gives you some sense of satisfaction and pride and to a larger extent-happiness. To that- happiness is priceless during these hard times. If a 400 knife makes you smile (which it does for me usually) then it is worth it. The smarter side of me knows though that the spyderco is just as good, will perform equal or near equal in all areas and will most likely be the one that Id be carrying if I was in harms way.

well if you want a tactical knife a strider would be much better then a sebenza. If all you need was a knife for use, according to what you described a delica/endura would be perfect. What makes the sebenza so much better then the delica/endura for edc?

I've been into knives for about two years, and gradually have moved up the "food chain" in knife price points. I have alot of blades in the 100-200 range that are great(BM dejavoo, gayle bradley etc)....my strider smf cc is friggin awesome, but the f&f is not perfect for $550. I bought a sebenza, and thought it would be my grail.....i was dissapointed. Beautifully made, tolerances etc...but i just don't like its' deployment mechanics( spydie holes are THE best without a doubt) I have a Umnumzaan on order(am i losing my mind?)

I thought a sebenza would be my end all....wrong...still spending

Thats the "joy" of this hobby, there isn't a holy grail, and even if you find it you move on to the next big thing after a while, closest thing I have to my holy grail is a PUMA Lieutenant which was my favorite knife for ten years till I came across the ZT 300's . It's a natural progression I guess. If it was just the knife there would be a lot more knife makers on here who sold knives, after a while Strider and Chris Reeves will go away ( and mean that in a broad sense before fanboys jump down my throat) and there will be someone else we can't wait to get a knife from.

I'd get one, but then I'd have to leave my Gerber LST in the drawer, and I like it too much for that. :D

However, some of us appreciate variety in blade steel. I really love my knives in S90V, CTS-XHP, CTS-20CP, CPM-M4, D2, M390, ELMAX, 440V, 1095, 1055, INFI, 52100, etc. There is also a lot to be said for edge retention. Speaking only for myself, I prefer trying exotic steels, new designs, and something I can really use and not feel bad about dinging up.

+1 to this, softer S30V just doesn't do it for me, If the Umnumzaan came in M390, 20CP or S90V, I'd be all over it.

Like I'm going to spend $400 on a knife, let alone a pocket knife.
Victorinox Pioneer/Cadet> any other pocket knive for light use.

Wow, can you just imagine an CPM-S90V Umnumzaan? I'd cough up the money for that real quick. That might just well be the best seller of all time.

 That would be an amazing knife. Time to start pestering various retailers (KnifeArt, TNK, etc.) about a dealer exclusive, perhaps? :D

Why doesn't everyone just have a small sebenza?

Because we'd all be better people if we carried the same knife as you?

Just like BMW who drivers think everyone should have a BMW...
college graduates who think everyone should go to college...
veterans who think everyone should join the military...

Yeah, why can't five billion of us be the exact same? ;)

Well, I don't have a small Sebbie, I do own a large one though. And (I'm sure I'll get flamed for this) I will say it is a great knife, the absolute be all end all knife .. for me.. well no. It sit's in the safe and gets carried very rarely. I guess I just don't get it, for the price of these, and the Striders, and Hinderers you could find a maker to custom make something for you.. only you. There won't be another knife just like it. To each their own and for me I like something unique. I'm not knocking these knifes at all, in fact I do happen to like them but for the price they just aren't for me. That goes for all those crazily priced beads... LOL ... I guess I'm just old and out of the loop.

Def!! I'd pre pre order it! I think everyone who has one now + those who dont want the s30v hardness, would all get one!

I think that no matter how much we asked for it, it would never happen. that's the vibe I get anyway.

No one will flame you for being honest, and if they did that would show a character defecit on that person. I guess I'm pretty old too, I wouldn't pay that much for a simple bead either. Unless of course it washed my car once a week while I was sleeping. ;)

I think they are a great knife, but I also think that a lot more knife can be had for the same or less money..Thats just my opinion so that and a nickel will get you nothin',LOL

If my money were going to CRK, it would go toward a Mnandi or an Umnum. Sebenzas are too plain for my taste.

I'm not convinced it would live up to the hype. It's been oversold to me, and $300 isn't something I can just jump into. I'm sure it's a nice knife, but I'd expect it to give me a handjob at this point. Only way I'll buy one is if I can hold one first, and I'm not sure how I'd go about doing that.

Yeah, I know. CPM-S90V (or CTS-20CP) is especially unlikely since CRK may not even be set up to grind the stuff. Another premium steel with a less extreme Vanadium content (e.g., M390, Elmax, CPM-M4) would be a bit more realistic, but even that is probably a long shot. :(
