Why don't people keep their Hinderer knives?

It seems like every time I check the exchange, there is always a different Hinderer knife up for sale. Why does it seem like nobody keeps their Hinderer knives?

I mean no disrespect to anybody that owns one, but I've never had one in my hand. Is it just all the hype that leads people to buying these knives and then once they receive them they figure out that they are not all that they are talked up to be? What's the deal?

They hold their value, maybe they need cash.

I have yet to find the perfect knife and I usually find at least one thing on every knife I buy that I wish was just a little bit different, so it usually gets sold at some point. My search for the perfect knife continues.

Their price? That would be my guess. There's no way i could afford one. And if i could afford it probably wouldn't use it cause of fear of damaging it.

Up till now, I've kept all the ones I've ever bought and have no immediate plans on selling any of them. However, given enough pressure and lack of finances I wold sell them in order to provide for my family. My guess would be that some folks come into contact with them and they may try and make a few bucks on them.

Some people buy them to flip, hoping to make some $. Worked for some but not for others because secondary market prices suddenly fell a while back. My buddy dropped 800 on one and sold it for 650 (unused) a year later.
Not my idea of what knife collecting should be, but I guess it has become part of the game.
And most of the XMs you see on the forums are barely used just for that reason.

IF................I could buy something for $385.00 and sell it for $600.00 to $800.00 I might be tempted to do so.

I have noticed that too, I think the ability to sell them for double (easily) the MSRP may play a role. I was recently looking into getting an XM-24 recently, then I came across a story written on a personal website of a gentleman I am familiar from other forums detailing his treatment by Hinderer...I don't want that knife so much anymore...

I wouldn't buy one to flip it, I'd love to get one to keep but your point stands. Too bad we're not part of a select few honorable occupations for Rick to sell as one. When these special people sell their $385 knives they got from Hinderer because they got they entered the correct field... They sell it at the secondary market rate and rightfully so. Just crazy how that works out though, every knife Hinderer sells is at HIS MSRP... Dealers, lottery winners, and priority customers alike all bump up the price because they are so scarce. YOU MEAN TO TELL ME HINDERER STILL HASN'T CAUGHT UP WITH DEMAND? Then he probably never will and it's by design. Wonder how sought after it will be if he does make it readily available. And before I get slammed for saying that... I know the excuses that Hinderer is small and that it's growing, CRK and Strider are small too but they sell to everyone and their knives are readily available. The scarcity BS is getting years old now. They will readily sell you cute shiny screws and embellishments for your "ultimate hard use duty knife" on their website though.

While I am not a fanboy, I would say that the "gentleman" as you so kindly refer to has a bit of a issue as well on these forums as well as others. It's not a surprise when I searched and easily found the individual to whom you refer. I will just leave it at that. Take what you read with a grain of salt, some folks make a living making a whole lot outta nothing.

Since they seem to hold their value, some folks might buy them to try them out knowing that they can be sold quickly and without loss if they don't like them.

Sebenzas are almost imposible to get in my country unless you go through the considerable trouble of importing one yourself. So when I had the chance to have a friend bring me one from the US, I didn't hesitate because I knew that if I didn't love it, it could sell it in a few hours (and earn a few extra bucks).

Also, as has already been mentioned some people might have financial needs and sell some knives to cover them or they flip a Hinderer that they were able to buy at MSRP.

Oh yeah I do take it with a lot of salt, it just kind of made me think twice, especially the part about not making knives for collectors, since that is what I am.

This certainly does go on to an extent, with any item where demand much exceeds supply. And then there was the man I heard an a gun store about 2 years ago tell the clerk he wanted a pair of M&P Shields, one to keep and one to sell (this is a crime FYI). His purchase was declined...

I always said they were a decent 285 dollar knife back when they were hand ground...I think I still have a couple.

I might be the odd bird in the bunch. I traded a Busse into a Hinderer Flame gen 2 about 5-6 years ago. This was a custom and had a sweet hand ground blade but it really never grew on me. The owner before me regaled me with stories of camping and yard work that it handled beautifully. I full well think that it's a great $385 hard use folder. But it doesn't do more for you than a sebenza would. Or a strider. Or a ZT. It's just not what people have inflated it to be. I truly believe the aftermarket hype is purely to keep profit flippers in business. The simple fact that sooooo many ZT/hinderers are always for sale shows you that the basic design of the XM18/24 platform just doesn't keep people interested, regardless of the multiple reviews that put the ZT line maybe 2% behind the XM-18.

If I were to venture a guess, I'd say RevDevil represents the majority of people who purchase Hinderers, not the minority.

I will jump in with an opinion. I had 2, one a Spanto, the other a slicer, both in S35VN. When I had the chance to buy a sterile blade 20CV Spanto, I sold my S35VN, same story with my slicer. I sold 2, but acquired 2 more. To me it was a steel upgrade. Not saying that's the norm, but it could be. Someone has a Spanto, wants a Slicer, has a flipper, wants a non flipper, etc. you get the idea. There are several variations with steels, blade types, flippers, non flippers. I can't afford a $600 knife without selling one to finance it.

Great Post. I made the awful mistake in sharing my take on my knives and what I carry with an *acquaintance*.

He works in that "Special Rick Knife Group". I should've never uttered a peep. What I shared with these two fellas (in my mind) was in the hope that it may either save their life or one of their friends.

I also hoped that I may at least get to handle one seeings how they carried *Absolute Junk*. To make a long story short I opened up a Cash Cow Firefighter and 2 EMT Pipeline.

Six knives from two different stations and an EMT " clubhouse" for lack of a better word. Not one of those guys owns a Hinderer knife as of three months ago. I was also told from a Very Reliable Source that my Stupidly Shared Information was then shared with other buddies in "the Kewl Kids Klub" in another state and another station etc. Now.....I know I am not the only one that did that. What Life Lesson did I learn from that? To Never Tell ANYONE that does Any Type of Work that helps people <---- isn't that sad?!?! about a tool that could maybe help them out or save their life or a loved one.

That is terrible what I typed. But It Is The Truth and I would more than likely feel sick if I knew the actual amount of money that was pilfered because of what I shared. Would I carry me a Kewl Kids Klub Knife? Never in a million years and it isn't sour grapes though one may think that. To actually see and know how that all went down gives me a bad bad feeling when it comes to "those knives". I am done. :-) Now I'll receive that " special notification thingey". Ha!
