Why Don't You EDC a Butterfly Knife?

If I could carry knives that intimidate liberal wusses, odds are I'd be carrying an auto instead.

This thread is a good example in that we need to open our minds more. Think for ourselves.

Recently, a knife knut friend said to me that he noticed every time I'd look a a new folder of his, or mine, I use two hands. I mean, what do I say to that?

I'd love to carry one, and they're finally legal in my state now.

My problem is that they all fall into either cheap junk crap that nobody would want, or extremely expensive. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

I don't want a cheap piece of crap, but I can't afford an expensive one right now.

More companies out there should make an "around $100 butterfly knife". If they did, I predict plenty of people would own one.

The Bradley Kimuras made by Kershaw were the bomb, and right in that price range. They should keep doing those and give people a chance to own one that isn't crappy junk, but costs less than $300.

Get a Bear Ops or a Bear and Sons, they are USA made, have a full lifetime warranty, and arent crap.

It's safer opening a new knife that you aren't familiar with with two hands (the first time). You can cut yourself.

As far as Bali's go, I feel sure I would be comfortable with one. But I have more knives than I will ever use, so why introduce a new action that isn't much improvement over flippers and AO's? The rub is that I probably wouldn't carry it anyway even if I bought one, so why bother?

So YOU can see if you like it!! ^
I will run your comment by my friend, Mr. singularity. :)

I got one of their "bear ops" bails when they first came out and they were around $30. I beg to differ. It was crapola.

If they've changed between then and now maybe I'd reconsider. That one was utter junk trash though.

Because I'm not a douche bag

Are you sure about that?

I carry my BM31 from time to time. Got a 51 still too, but it needs a pivot screw replaced. I find them to be quite practical. They "lock" without needing to be locked and as long as you're practiced are just as safe or even safer than other knives. Owned and carried a number of others too over the years (42MC, 42-400, 32, 43MC, Mayhem, Spyderfly, Szabofly, etc). Only have the 52 and 31 left. Living in Arizona has its benefits.

I don't EDC a balisong because I like heavier, stainless balis. They just feel better I think.

Couple that with a Hank Hill ass and all the rest of the crap I haul around and it becomes quite difficult to keep my pants up where they ought be. I do still carry one on occasion, but no so frequently as to call it EDC'd.

Other than the general heft of the thing, I've got no problem carrying one. I've found them to be well received by knife knuts and those other people alike in casual settings. They're more flamboyant than threatening.

Haha, that's quite a broad brush he's painting with. Although in my case....

Balisongs aren't illegal in my country but common opinion is that they're thug knives.

Personally I agree with @Fanglekai. Not very practical for me.

Balisongs are legal in my state and I own a Benchmade one, but I honestly can't see any upside to carrying one as an EDC. Beyond the fact that I don't care for the blade geometry necessitated by the balisong blade-inside-handle design, they are widely considered to be "hoodlum" knives and deploying one is noisy, flashy, and liable to attract negative attention from bystanders. Sure, the lockup is strong but I'm not certain it's that much better than an Axis lock or even a lockback in actual use. If I'm that worried that the task I'm doing with any knife might break the lock, then it's time for a fixed blade.

I edc my bm Magnus. Tons of fun & has a pocket clip. But to be honest it was designed more for utility than flipping, so maybe that has to do with it

Butterfly knives don't seem like a practical edc choice to me, in modern times. And I don't have decades to dedicate in mastering their martial use.

That's it right there, people can argue all day that you should just open it two handed but in that case why even carry a balisong. If I was gonna carry a balisong and open it two handed I might as well take one extra step and open the blade on my leatherman instead.
