Why is my big box $3.00 throw-a-way knife (made in China) WAY sharper than my online bought Spyderco

highest rated on yelp......doesnt mean much. so his friends and people at his church have given him good reviews. :) two wheel sharpener......so a benchgrinder hes using? or a belt driven one for putting hollow grind on stock? I'm not sure what setup hes using?

why not send it to one of the high skilled sharpeners here on this forum who always have gotten good results and find out if it can indeed get sharp?

Yeah I too am not impressed with my VG-10 Spyderco flipper. Though I can't recall which model it is, it's got an Emerson bottle opener on it and I really regret buying it because of my experience with the knife and that stupid bottle opener catching on everything and ripping my clothes up.

Part of it is the grind, which I really don't like and find completely useless and counterproductive for something that's supposed to cut things. Part of it is what I'm guessing is a poor heat treat. I hear Spyderco fanbois rave about their heat treats, though, so I'm willing to accept the idea that maybe mine isn't a real Spyderco, since I too bought it on Amazon.

Anyway, not exactly helpful I'm guessing, but sometimes commiseration can be cathartic. Lol

Sorry but you don’t know what your talking about in this post.

You are describing a Spyderco waved Emerson Delica or Endura. It is not a flipper and it does not have a bottle opener.

It’s made specifically to catch on you clothes to open and it sounds like it’s working as designed.

These have a Sabre grind and they aren’t the best slicers but they were not design to be that. They are supposed to be a balance of a utility/defensive pocket knife.

Are you kidding? Your 3$ knife isn't going to keep that edge for long and it's soft and easy to sharpen because of that. Send your Delica to someone who knows how to sharpen. It's not hard. But it's a bit more difficult than your 3$ knafs.

You have two options. Send it to spyderco for free sharpening or send it to T L E cause he offered you a deal. If he can't do it then he will tell you why. If you send it to spyderco explain to them no one else can sharpen it and you would like to know if there is an issue with the steel.

I don't trust local sharpening people cause they never see anything as exotic other than cheap knives usually.

OP PLEASE READ THIS!!!!!

I was in your exact position a few years ago, trust me, it isn’t the knife and I can explain. I had a Spyderco Endura that I bought new, it’s basically a large version of your Delica. I posted a similar thread on this forum and these guys pretty much responded the same way. I even went as far as contacting Spyderco about this and they told me to get a Sharpmaker.
There is nothing wrong with your knife or VG10 steel, you need to practice more and possibly upgrade your sharpening system like I did. If you keep practicing, consider upgrading, you will be pleasantly surprised when you get the hang of it.

You posted nearly this same question about a month ago with tons of responses. Strange idgi

Good I am not the only one, I thought I had s weird dejavu..o_O

Definitely not just you. Here's the thread.

In fact, in that thread, I even offered to sharpen it for him for free, with the caveat that I'm not a pro. OP got great advice to make sure it was a legit knife, and as far as I can tell, hasn't actually taken any affirmative steps toward that.

OP- Go to the spyderco sum forum here on BFC. Post detailed pictures of the knife. Include pics of the blade, the markings/writing on the blade, the jimping, the handle, everything. The folks there will be able to tell you if it's a real Spyderco. If it is, it's a damned good knife.

Until you actually do your homework and post up good detailed pics, nobody anywhere in the world can really help you.

Also as has been stated in other threads the sharp maker is more of an edge maintenance system when using the V jigs than a true sharpener.

It does work better at keeping knives sharp, I rarely use the V jigs on mine. I considered getting the diamond rods so I can sharpen harder steels more effectively and ultra fine rods to get a better polished edge.

using a sharpie to determine if you have matched the edge angles.

Thanks Knarfeng
That is a good and detailed answer, I appreciate that.... & will do

Q - What angle do you recommend for a Delica Flat Ground VG-10
Q - What official angle did this knife originally come with?

omg this thread is too much...

Can someone please draw him a diagram showing why he's not apexing his knife with his sharpmaker? $100 says that's his problem, as if we all couldn't tell already.

Thanks Knarfeng

I use 15DPS, with a 20DPS microbevel, and then strop with green paste. Gets pretty crazy sharp, and takes a nice mirror polish.

Yeah but he started this thread a couple weeks back and everyone already went over ALL of this with him.
https://www.bladeforums.com/threads...-vg10-is-cheap-steel-hard-to-sharpen.1597924/

At this point I think hes just mad he can't sharpen it so hes basically flaming spyderco in his headline as a way to make it look like they suck because he lacks sharpening skills.

Very Wrong assumption; did you read the Benchmade is Very sharp now from the exact same two wheel sharpener shop
and stropping, but not even the Delica, - explain that !

never mind doesnt matter.....
