Why so little love for TOPS?

I've got nothing but respect for TOPS and I think they make quality products, but their knives are almost always overbuilt for my needs. If they made more knives from thinner stock I'd buy more stuff from them.

Armageddon, D.A.R.T., Condor Alert, Anaconda (both Tanto and Hunter's Point), Coyote Blue, Bros. of Bushcraft, there's some TOPS love. All of them awesome, never had a problem with edge retention or breakage.

I like some of their knives looks and I believe they are all well crafted. The main problem with Tops in my opinion is they have too many choices. I've looked at their line up before hoping to buy something and then just got confused. I just give up til I can look again.

I like the looks of the Dragonfly and BoB (fieldcraft) but cannot decide between the two.

Does anyone here own both or at least handled both? I'm leaning toward the DF but have heard nothing but great thugs about the BoB.

I have them both, and I like 'em both about equally. The Dragonfly would be my preference if I were also carrying an axe and/or a saw in my daypack. The thinner blade makes for a very light and well balanced package that slices superbly.

If I were to have just a knife on me, then I would opt for the BOB because that thing is pretty much apocalypse proof and still cuts very, very well for a knife with that thick of a blade.

IMO, there really is no "wrong" choice between them. If you don't intend to chop rocks with 'em, either will do nicely....

For starters they have terrible grinds on 95% of there blades. Not only do they not come sharp, and do not have good grinds, they for the most part do not of good blade shape to begin with. And they are generally more expensive than other knives of better quality. And that's why there is so little love for Tops.

There is that small 5% that looks like they would do well, but every one I have played with was terrible.

After lusting after one for months I finally got my TOPS BoB. I can't be happier with it. Have done some carving and lite chopping and battoning with it and am excited to use it more.

I agree a great deal of their knives are of outrageous design but there are several I wouldn't mind owning if I had the disposable income. However, I'll put the Tahoma Field Knife on my want list and leave it at that as I prefer my Beckers and can buy at least two of them for the price of one TOPS blade I like.

I dont know what knives this has from tops but I have four models that all have good grinds and came very sharp.like hair cutting sharp.

A company with the name TOPS that designs, produces and markets a "Bartender Defender" and "Atax Hand Axe" will attract ridicule. I just cannot take them serious and will rather look elsewhere. My perception might well be wrong but perceptions do affect sales.

Yeah, they have some nice knives in their lineup, but "Taliban Takedown" ? Really ?
Never heard anything bad about their quality though and I will buy the Pathfinder School knife some time later this year

I have always liked the Armageddon, the Bootleggers ( I & II) and for some reason the Tom Brown tracker but every time I think I'm going to pull the trigger on one something else jumps in front of them

:D I laughed out loud. The names and marketing can be pretty wild...

What I see in my mind when TOPS comes up is a teenager that wants to be GI Joe one day who downloaded a CAD package from KickAssTorrents to design knives for his 22 year old nephew that has access to metal working machinery.

I'm sorry if this picture upsets some here but I just give it as I see it. As I said before ... it's just my perception that may well be unjustified.

Haters gonna hate...

Haters gonna hate...

I believe there is a huge gap between hate and an unfavorable perception. I don't hate TOPS. How can I as I never owned any of their products ... but I can have a perception. If I happen to own one one-day I will then decide on the hate vs love dynamics.

No offense ment. Just being me. I probably should have stuck a couple of smilies in there. Sorry.

I own a couple TOPS knives and both are the Tracker. I'm used to hearing negative comments and I don't get all defensive or hurt.
