The big knife thing - easy. When I go into my office I need a tool that will "take care of business." You never can tell when a big box might come from UPS and need to be opened! Not only that, but on a daily basis I have to deal with the dreaded mail task. Sometimes I am in a real hurry and need to open those envelopes fast. 
One time I actually had to use my knife outside - there was some string wrapped around the antenna on my car - boy, did I polish off that in a hurry!
I have a question though - the people in the building keep looking at me like some kind of weirdo - do you think it is because of the sheath for the bowie that I wear on my belt? I don't see why, mostly I just carry the 10".
