Why the Vic Farmer?

Can those of you who swear by the Vic Farmer please tell me why you do? I'm wondering if I am missing something. I know that the saw is great for the woods, but I carry a Huntsman in the woods which has a saw but also has a scissor and tweezers which also come in very handy. Why would you carry the Farmer over the Huntsman? It is better looking with the metal scales, but other than that I don't get it. Thanks for the input.

The Farmer's saw and blade are larger than the Huntsman and the alox scales create a sturdier construction than the red handled classic SAKs. Yes the tweesers and toothpick(?) may be a bonus.

I started out carrying a Leatherman Wave, but got tired of the wasted tools that I didn't use in the bush. All I needed was a blade, saw, can and bottle openers. The awl comes in handy as well. Then, after the Wave I used one of the old Camillus utility knives. It's like the Farmer but without the saw. It was only recently that I discovered the Farmer and finally got it today. I did consider the Huntsman, but I wouldn't use the scissors, corkscrew, small blade, tweezers (I have a set in my PSK), hook or toothpick. The Farmer has just what I need, right size and durable scales.

I carry one around in my hiking bag because it's an extra, lightweight saw.

I've got a farmer, but miss the toothpick and tweezers a lot. I'm gonna add a classic or a rambler to it.

(I actually usually carry my wave more than the farmer because the pliers are so useful, and I think the saw and blades are better as well).

the main blade on the alox models is much thicker than on the standard models...the knife is basically unbreakable, and it opens up tight like a vault door...I used to carry a huntsman it was a great knife but i would trust the farmer much more...

The farmer is a great knife, I own a couple, and yes they are tougher than the cellidor models, but the cellidor models are plenty strong imo. I like the trekker and hiker best for woods carry, though I do carry a farmer occasionally

the saw on the farmer and huntsman are identical. the swisstool spirit saw it shorter by two teeth but is also stiffer. the saw on the lockblades is the largest and might be a bit thicker but it still flexes like the 91mm saw.

The Vic. Farmer is simply the best combination of the most useful tools in a compact, sturdy package.

Gosh, I thought that's why I got the Rucksack. The best combination of tools. Love to have that in Alox.

I like the Rucksack as well.
I like that, unlike the Farmer, the reamer on the Rucksack has the hole to use as an awl. The toothpick is nice, the tweezers I find too flimsy for serious work.
The corkscrew, well, in case someone caries a bottle of Dom in their survival kit. . .

I have the Pioneer Rancher. It is along the same lines as the Farmer or Pioneer Harvester but without the saw. The alox knife is much more robust than my other SAK's. The blades are thicker, the awl more substantial. I really like these knives. But, mine doesn't have a saw so I picked up a Bundeswehr SAK (OHT) with the saw. It is very function despite its size. As for corkscrews, I always travel with one, never know when you may pickup a nice bottle wine.

One of the advantages of the farmer is that the awl opens to the end rather than the middle of the knife...much more useful.

I like the Electrician a little better than the Farmer. Has a small second blade instead of the can opener. No lanyard hole though.

The corkscrew is one of the tools that is very difficult to improvise when you really need one. The main reason I prefer them though is that they hold the micro-screwdriver. As someone who wears glasses I really like them. I have added the micr-screwdriver to every corkscrew equipped SAK I have.

I rotate between the OHT, camping SAK, and LM wave. I think I'm going to include the farmer in my collection sooner or later.

+1

I have done this to all of my SAK's that have a corkscrew.
The Farmer is also the largest SAK that I was able to fit into an Altoids tin.

You know that is a good idea since I too wear glasses and the screws somethimes get loose. That's why I sometime like to carry my LM because of the micro screw driver. I think I will have to invest in getting one those small screw drivers too.
