Why the Vic Farmer?

Alox models, like the Farmer, also have heavier backsprings than Cellidor models.

I find for my needs the Outrider works best.

Blade that locks, saw, and scissors. In the corkscrew I can put a Vic eyeglass screwdriver.

I wanted multifunctionality, and the scissors would help with any wound debridement.

YMMV

I got an Outrider vs a Trekker to get the scissors. The Farmer is so much smaller and lighter. The blades on the 111mm Vic models are so long and thin-- they seem fragile.

Other ways to include scissors: buy a pair of Fiskars #4 or #5 crafts/sewing scissors, or carry an SAK Classic, Leatherman Micra or other scissor-based mini-multi-tool. I EDC a Classic and have a Stayglow Classic on my survival lanyard.

The blades on my OHT don't seem fragile at all. I think the Trekker series have thicker blades.

The liner lock 111mm Vics (all One hand opening and a few 2 hand) have a thicker blade (2.5mm) than the 111mm slide lock models (I forget thickness). The Farmer blades are thicker (2.75mm) than the liner lock 111mm blades.

Dale you make a great argument for when she says; "Why do you need another one?"

answer; "To MATCH and ACCESSORIZE" like you do!

Collecting SAK's is about as easy as it gets in the knife world. If you're getting static on station WIFE, show her what a Sebenza goes for. What's the ratio there-- 20:1 or so? :) You could get several SAK's for what a Sebenza sheath goes for!

It works as it is intended and is eay to keep with you. It's a nice looking knidfe that will not offend even the most timid of sheep.

The only change I would make is to move the lanyard rings on the alox models so they are positioned like the cellidor models, rather than sticking straight off the back. I ended up grinding mine off because it dug into my hand.

Other than that, I think it's perfect.

Just got myself a red alox in the mail today. Much smaller than my Climber and Super Tinker. Sturdy little knife for the price. Only complaint is the nail nick on the blade is blocked by the saw. Might have to see about swapping the bottle opener for a pen blade or something.

Mine leaves just enough to clear and get my thumbnail in there. You could take a little off the flat that forms the stop for the saw, allowing it to drop down a little more.

You could grind the bottle opener just below the screwdriver blade to get a good sharp right angle for firesteel scraping.

I think the Vic Farmer is one of the greatest all-time pocketknives ever designed...not that I have a strong opinion about it one way or the other! (LOL)

I like carrying a Farmer and another SAK, such as a Super Tinker, Ranger or Hunter. Great combination of tools for very little weight. When I combine this with a smallish fixed-blade, such as my micarta-handled F1 or a Mora, that's a great set-up!

The lanyard ring I think was an after thought on Vic's part, if you look at their other Alox models they don' have it. If you open the awl and/or screwdriver/opener and look at the lanyard ring you will see why it has to be there (the 91mm knives are about 1.5mm wider than the Alox ones which is why the lanyard ring bites into the hand). There is a custom conversion out there with a piece of 3mm tube used as a hallow rivet which can hold a bail (like on the Wenger Standard Issue).
