Why won't Spyderco explore deep carry pocket clips?

With the dawn of the PM3 on the horizon, I was thinking more about getting an after-market deep carry clip for it. And, I was considering a few more for my other Spydies. That got me wondering: will we ever see a Spydie with a deep carry clip? I know the wire clips are close....but they aren't close enough for my taste.

Heck, Spyderco practically invented the clipped pocket knife. Seems like a natural evolution to me.

I like deep carry clips, but it seems they are part of trendy words along with titanium, frame lock and flipper :)
I prefer Spyderco to be true to their own standards than running after what is more a trend to le than a real necessity

What, like the Mantra, Advocate, or Southard?

I recall Sal or Spyderco saying something to the effect of - we supply a standard clip with the knife and there are plenty of aftermarket options if someone wants a different clip. Seems like when they do a deep carry clip it's model specific like with the Lionspy or PPT. Not counting the wire clip.
Personally I'm not a big fan of fold-over deep carry clips. I like the better retention you get with a standard clip and I also like some handle to grab onto when extracting the knife from pocket. Finally, if it's a short handle then the deep carry clip can impede grip because it sticks out further due to the fold-over.

What makes you think they aren't exploring it? Seal is remarkably responsive to the desires of his customers, but he does not compromise his standards to serve them. He has been working on such designs for years now, but has not found one secure and durable enough to put his logo on.

We were told that there would be a factory deep carry clip made available but we haven't seen one yet. I thought it would be in the new catalog.

As far as why? Well, we can only speculate. I assume that Spyderco has actually looked into this and I think they are doing what makes the most sense on a model by model basis. If you look at the catalog there are quite a few with deep carry wire clips and most are EDC blades and more so gents folders. The decision presumably comes down to what kind of knife it is as it is more or less a trade off between discretion/aesthetics and ease of deployment. For an EDC blade discretion is nice but for a utility or self defense blade ease of deployment would seem to be the more desirable quality.

We have also been told that they didn't really want to offer deep carry hourglass clips because while it may seem like a simple part to offer Spyderco would want each clip to be a good fit for the specific model and while the differences are not always a lot the clip position does vary a little from model to model. There just isn't a lot of potential profit (and likely some loss) to stocking a full assortment of deep carry clips.

Yes
IMHO the mantra and advocate are not giving us anything new
They are just some responses to market trends

The southward may be a different topic considering when it has been introduced

I don't think deep-carry clips are trendy. Particularly when discretion is an issue, deep-carry clips are a welcome innovation for me. I prefer not to telegraph that I'm carrying, so unless it has a (black) deep-carry clip it goes in the pocket or stays home.

My absolute favorite clip is the fold-over wire clip from the Sage/UKPK/Caly. Simple, attractive, effective, and doesn't involve any additional hardware; easily the smartest clip design out there. I swapped out my shiny stock ones for black ones from the Sage 1; disappears on black jeans. More importantly, as it was part of original design intent and not aftermarket/afterthought, it doesn't impair the ergos, which is sometimes an issue when adding a deep clip to a knife that wasn't designed with one. My mini-grip is less comfortable, but gets carried more now that it wears a black Contego clip, while my ZT0450 never saw any carry before it got a black Ti aftermarket job.

As for Spyderco staying true to their standards, their standard has always been to continually improve the quality of their products according to customer feedback. Sal is probably reading this. Hi Sal.

The Spyderco Jannisong has a great deep carry clip, but its sadly unavailable on anything else. Spyderco has made a deep carry clip they will put their name on.

probably because its more important to come up with new knifes!then custom clips or DC pocket clips, but i really think there wire clips are outstanding.

I think the wire clip on many of their knives carries fairly deep. I guess today deep carry isn't good enough, people want ultra deep carry. Honestly though deep carry clips also in a way hold a knife deeper making it less likely to catch and fling the knife out your pocket. As long as they keep offering tip up on their models I'm happy.

Yes sir, I'm with you on this.

its a non issue to me either way. i got no need to deep carry or hide anything cause i can legally carry about any knife. i dont dislike deep carry nor do i need it. im good either way.

Yep. Me too.

Per a conversation I had with Sal in person about this very topic last April, this is the most correct reason. Spyderco does indeed already have a deep carry clip that they designed in house in the last year or so and they have not released it yet (I suspect it's pretty similar to the Janisong clip) - and likely will not from what I hear. I showed Sal my (very many) Casey Lynch clips and we chatted about how Sal's and Spyderco's philosophy was all about helping out small business owners like Casey thrive without simply releasing their own stock solution and putting the aftermarket clip guys out of business (folks in addition to Casey).

Just as an FYI, Casey sells his clips in small batches from BladeHQ, and I've managed three times now to grab 2 clips from them each time in the last three months. So they are intermittently available, it may be best to set up email notifications with them for when they come in stock. I do wish Casey would stock some long clips with them. Hope that helps. Cheers, Radioactive :)

I much prefer deep carry, I work in healthcare and its much easier to just have a clip showing than an inch of knife showing. I've never had issues with retention strength or retrieval from pocket, you just put one finger on the clip, and slide another in the pocket and grab the knife and pull it out. My PM2 in particular is improved dramatically by the addition of a deep carry clip.

I think the aftermarket ones y'all put on your knives are ugly as sin. I like a bit of handle peeking out most of the time, like Spyderco does it. Easier to grab.
