Wife hates my Tilley Hat... Are there any full brimmed hats that actually look good?

Well, this thread has convinced me to grab a Real Deal hat. They've got a special going where you can order a second one for half price. Anyone want a Real Deal for $20 plus shipping (it seems to be $5 a hat)? I'll throw it on my order, if someone wants to pay for shipping from me to them.

Got myself a tilley, since it looks better than my old canvas bucket it gets the pass. After I bought it though, I realized it was the same shade of foliage as my man-purse. curse the accidental co-ordination, actually the man-bag is so covered with other stuff, its hard to tell the original color anyway.

Ya got that right. Spending days outside during the summer in the bad parts of Arizona really showed me that when the temps get up, you have to cover. Even if sunscreen keeps you from burning, you're still suffering from exposure, elevated body temperature and actual heat burns. Getting comfortable is the only thing that matters.

I opted for the cotton airflow, and so far, so good. Probably could have gotten a larger size one, wasn't too sure, so I went with the snugger option in the store. But a good stretch, and its all good, also means that even without the cord, it stays stuck to my noggin.

I just posted this picture in another thread, but it surely belongs here as well...

I have had this hat since 2004. (Ironically, My wife was with me when I bought it at REI ... and she still isn't 100% on it ...yet!) Since then I have put this hat through almost every adventure (& non-adventure;)) possible. Hiking, camping, hunting, shooting, woods loafing, kayaking, Cub scouts, summer, winter, business trips, shoved in a backpack for days, lost in luggage, dropped in the lake, worn as rain-gear, and on & on ... It even looks reasonable with business attire. It's cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

I replaced the "pleather" hatband with a custom tooled hatband I made out of vegtan leather, and riveted on. I love this hat. I think my wife has made her peace with it after 9 years ...

I hate to agree, but those Tilly's should nearly universally be called old man tourist hats. Check out a mil spec boonie from a place like Proppers or 5.11. Get one in tan. never get a second look.

I wore hats include the infamous steel pot 50y ago when I was helping make the world safe for democracy and swore I would never wear another unless I really needed to. Remember the Ridgeway hat?

I started buying Tilley hats 20y ago. Their selection certainly has changed.

I am a shade and a half darker than albino and wear size 8 so good hats are hard to come by. The T4 has worked well for me. I officiated track and field in Baton Rouge for 20y and needed a light, waterproof hat. The Tilleys worked best, but I think I'm gonna get a tarp hat.

Tilley used to go into some detail about how proper fitting means the hat will stay on your head better. I didn't check if they still do, but I've not had any problem with one blowing off. Same with the Akubas.

Boonies are good but they generally have a fairly narrow brim. "Official" boonies are made by the indigenous people you serve with.

Haha...I have to agree with your wife (and Tal) on this one. I always associate Tilley hats with guys who wear those ridiculous "travel vests" that have 47 pockets on them. What are those things anyway? They kinda sorta look like a photo or fishing vest, but they aren't really functional for either one of those activities. They're just for...."traveling" in? :D

Usually when I am wearing a vest it is because I am CC'ing a second pistol in a shoulder holster, and the weather doesn't warrant a jacket. I could care less if I look like a dork. A well armed one. I already buck the trends by wearing a full brimmed hat. I laugh at the guys in their 30s & 40s still trying to look all metro "cool" like college kids. To me clothing is form follows function and "dress around the gun."

The vest also serves as having your 10 outdoors essentials evenly & comfortably distributed on you without having to wear a small backpack or lumbar pack, for light day hikes, hunting, around the camp, etc. To each his own.

Sunbody makes great hats. I have two
