Wife hates my Tilley Hat... Are there any full brimmed hats that actually look good?

FatCat55, I wear them all and don't give a darn what folks think.
Ask Esav

A guy in the elevator the other day asked me why I wear a hat everyday.
I told him, first because I like to and second because it is a solid bit of gear.
He understood the first part, was clueless to the second.

My daughter and I just went to a local park to stroll around. Sky was sunny, sky was gray, drizzle started and stopped along the way. But as she said, it's OK, you've got a hat.

Here are a couple of beat up old Akubra hats-fur felt and the range of styles is huge.
the one on the right is a Hayward and the one on the left a Cattleman (it is due for replacement after around 10 years ).
cheers

But you'd better be quick I think the bushturkey has his eye on them.

Cool hats, Meako.

There really is nothing quite like a hat with character!

I do still have an old cowboy hat (from when I legitimately had reason to wear one) but it is completely worn out. I used it for several years and it served its purpose well.

I always considered a hat as a tool first and a fashion statement second.

I tried on some more hats his weekend in Dallas but didn't find what I was looking for. I will keep looking!

And here my wife is the one that pushed me into wearing a Tilley.
Getting thinner on top and since I'm not a big fan of ball caps, she dropped this one on my head....

So I picked up a second one too.

Oso, does the airflow model significantly improve the head temp/sweating over the other model?

It really does. I bought the Outback one because I liked the look a little better, but I keep finding myself going back to the other. Between the nylon construction and the mesh, its a lot cooler and it dries faster than the cotton Outback. I'd be all over a Airflo in the darker color!

I have the same one, and it definitely makes a difference.

ETA: If you're really moving though, it's still not enough (why I'd consider an all-mesh-upper hat). If the sun isn't too much of an issue and I'm moving fast, I usually opt to take it off.

I also have a Tilley LTM6 vented nylon hat and wear it all the time. The sun here is really bright and really hot. The vented brim makes a huge difference and keeps my head nice and cool (and protected). I think the canvas ones look better, but mine is entirely function before form. I don't care what it looks like. I also don't care what my wife thinks about how it looks. She doesn't have to wear it. Actually, she bought it for me! ;)

Filson hat, Patagonia pullover, REI trail pants.....the list goes on and on of the gear my wife says "looks stupid". I bet it's 90% of my stuff.

I stumbled across this thread a little while back.

As luck would have it, I was in a local general store that sells a bit of just about everything. A hat band caught my eye peeking out from several hats on the shelf. I pulled it out and noticed it was a Stetson. I've always wanted a Stetson...just seems like something every semi-outdoorsy kinda guy ought to own at least once in their life...like a pair of good Danner boots, Filson garmet, etc.

So anyway, its a Stetson Sturgis crushable wool felt model. Has sort of a classic brimmed hat look without being too 'honkey tonk' if you know what I mean. Nice dark Cordova color. It's the sort of hat that would go with a variety of clothes, and is decent looking enough that it wouldn't be out of place going to a decent restaurant on a rainy night out. Practical, but probably a bit warm for the upcoming summer months.

It was funny too, as I was checking out, I mentioned that the lady of the house would probably just roll her eyes when I got home...the checkout lady said well, ya never know it might just do something for her. I had to chuckle. When I got home, I didn't get too much eye roll, but a level of tolerant amusement.

I love my Tilley Hemp hat. If my wife were to tell me she didn't like it I would tell her I like it enough for both of us. It works for other things too. I make a point to compliment other Tilley wearers on their hat when I meet one. They are very comfortable and durable.

Another vote for the Real Deal. I've had mine a coupla years now and it looks just as good (or bad, depending) as the day it was made.

Revisiting this thread....
in total love with my Real Deal.... I swear, everywhere I go wearing this hat.... hot chicks remark that they love my hat. Just saying'......

I always wanted a Tilley, but the style doesn't suit me really well and I sweat way too much so I got addicted to Buffs.
I take the UV ones and they are awesome!

I wear a Real Deal 90% of the time when I'm hiking, best outdoors hat I've ever owned. The other times I'll wear a boonie hat or sometimes just a baseball cap.

It's funny that brimmed hats have mostly fallen out of favor for baseball hats. For being out in sun or rain, a full brim just makes a lot sense to me. Stetson or Filson are my usual choices.
