Wild hogs

I love this movie !!!!!:thumbsup::D:D:D

Oh you meant hunting wild hogs ;):) LOL I’ve never been , but sounds fun !!!

Been hunting swine since I was a kid, a bit of a rite of passage where I come from. Did the grab and stick thing when I was young'n and have shot a metric shyte tonne of them off bikes (both motor and peddle) out in the western flat country. They still get my blood up hunting them. They are kind of incidental to deer hunting now.

Good idea.

From a few weeks ago...

My buddy when we were looking around for hogs.

Found some diggings by a large boar (which we never caught).

Andy I would love to hear a story or two from you about hog hunting, especially if you've kept any photos. I'm still new to it and insights from experienced guys are always appreciated. It's how I learn. E.g. How you find them, where you look for them (thick scrub? Paddocks? Water holes?), what calibre gun you use, do you only use a scoped rifle or do you use unscoped ever, etc.

I can see how it can turn into a bit of an obsession, it's good fun!!

One of my greatest regrets is that I only started carrying a camera regularly about 20yrs ago. Prior to that I have very few pics of us out and about, there are some but I will need to scan them.

I have taken hogs with a whole range of calibres, .22RF through to .375H&H (but I also hunt rabbits with that ;) ). I would say I have shot more with .308Win (out of SLRs and M14s waaay back when) than any other, after that it would be .223 (ARs and Mini14s also back when). I have happily used open sights, early reflex sights (Armson OEG when they were first released), RDS and optics. Its all about what YOU can shoot with less about "suited to the task".

Finding them is also dependent on the country I am hunting but for hogs (less so deer and other grazing critters) water is a must. Out west hunting off the tanks and out is always a good plan (especially if you see good wallows) and anywhere else along the water course that may exist. Like most game the first and last light are the best time to find them in the open. If hog sign is present (like that digging you see) you can just walk and use your sight and ears to help you (when digging hogs will make lots of "happy sounds" as they churn away. Like anything there is also an element of luck. In really hot weather I like to sit off water and just wait them out.

For huge laughs I like the guys who plant the tannerite in a bucket of feed. I admit I laugh my ass off, in the same breath think- can't believe they are that stupid to post it on youtube. The civilians like to make a house pet out of every living thing but just look at the "rooting" picture above- if you're a cattleman or horseman, you have a tough choice to make at any cost- No different than prairie dogs digging holes the cattle can break their legs in- Can't save em all, sometimes you have to make choices.

I wish jerry would do a run of that MMD proto. I like the thinner blade, its a full tang slasher...and stabber...

If there was an MMD proto in INFI with a guard and a partial swedge I'd be all over it.

I was gonna post this in the HOG Gemini thread, I was thinking it was kind of getting derailed.

Rambo took one down with his knife attached to a stick, didn’t he? I never hear people admit to eating any part of them (even guys who say they’ll eat whatever critter(skunk, raccoon, etc) walks onto their property)and I’ve never been tried it, it must taste like free range bacon, right? I know they are pest species, but have you ever tried any of the loin, tongue, or snout?

I’m definitely gonna try to get a HOG comp finish with black an tan g10 as well. Probably just the one, though. I really wish I could afford at least 3, all HOG comp! This would be my first TG, as well as the thickest infi I have yet, but the shortest blade.

There is a guy who actually trains people to kill them with homemade spears from horseback. I havent done it I just smiled and shook my head when he told me. You can eat them, I have a few times. Loin / rump. I think you need to be very skilled when butchering them. Like that guy who butchers Homer Simpson's blowfish. The guys who actually hunt some are pretty meticulous about it, instead of field dressing like a deer they almost perform surgery with several specific cutting tools. I dont know if they do that because they can or because they need to. There are a lot of details I dont know about the whys and why nots of the whole eating wild hog thing.

The land I go to is very easy to find multiple big groups of hogs. Theres some creeks, ponds a river, part of a pretty good sized lake as well. Theyll just go to certain spots and the people who live on it have spent years forcing them to certain locations by making a lot of the land less desirable to the hogs and leaving areas of tree/brush in certain spots near the water. They roam around, every year Ill hear him cussing about a group of them that got close to one of his properties or near a certain farm. I think hes one of maybe a few people that own a whole section of land in the state (640 acres).

Its gonna be different depending on where you are geographically, we've never had to put much effort into finding them. The first time I was 25 and the people I was with had been doing it for a long time. Ive done it the past 11 years, this will be the 12th.

Wild animals are almost always healthier than their domesticated or farmed, or whatever, cousins. I love wild goose and venison, and that gamey flavor of the fat is anti-cholesterol fat(like wild salmon). I’m sure the fatback or bacon would be disgusting to somebody used to farm raising their hogs but yuppie types would be all over buying “free range” pork products. Here in the US a lot of grass fed beef is imported from Australia at reasonable prices, and it’s the only kind of beef a heart specialist recommended to me. The burgers are great, even the ribeye is good, definitely the gamey flavor takes a little sea salt and pepper to overcome, but since it’s either that or nothing for me I go with it.
Sometimes what they’re digging for is pretty valuable as well, such as the white truffle in France, which is like $200 an ounce.

Unfortunately no wild boar by me but deer are plentiful all winter, it’s probably considered poaching but since they don’t have predators( coy dogs or coywolves or coyoteshaven’t killed many at all near me that I’ve noticed) most of their deaths happen on the road. Hunting them would have to be quiet since it’s probably not just poaching but a firearms offense outside of hunting season(if I were inclined, but I’m law abiding so I don’t.) I can take fat squirrel via blowgun by opening a window though.

What animal are they blowing up?

feral hogs - These ranchers catch them in feeding spots and get 8 or 9 with 1 shot then shoot the limpers and hobblers. What people miss is they go collect all that pork and donate it locally so it doesn't go to waste which is the most important part for me but you know how it is, if you can't fit all the explanations in a single tweet people walk away only half brain dead.

Your average tweet kiddie or cell phone addicted millennial doesnt understand how things work out in places with farming and livestock. The land I go to has multiple large farms that cant have wild hogs roaming all over the place because that produce hits the shelves and people buy it and eat it. Flooding can take out a bunch of wheat fields. Land insurance covers a ton of money, millions and millions but the farmers dont care because the wheat / veggies / farming is a hell of a lot better off when its not being destroyed / interrupted by water or wild pigs.

I doubt if even the limpers suffer as much as I do hearing these kids whine about something they know nothing about.
Every citizen should spend a year on a farm or ranch and then a year in the military, after or before finishing high school or the age of 20.

You're right about the damage they do to farm land. This pic is from over my back fence on the neighbor's cattle farm; this pig was just passing through but still tore up the place. This is one of several diggings, just a few weeks ago.
