Wilderness skills = hobby

I guess you guys told me...::)

CSG, I'm not a moderator and I don't even play one on TV. But as a long time member here, I'd like to offer a friendly suggestion. We have members here from all walks of life, all ages and experiences and from all over the world. There are now well over 100,000 members. I count many of them as my friends including both you and Macclint. And the rest I like to think of as friends I just haven't met yet.

One way we make and keep friends here and maintain a friendly atmosphere in this forum is to refrain from using the : Jerkit : icon needlessly. It is rather rude and insulting and even when not meant that way is often taken that way. There is no "rule" in this forum against using it, other than the rules of civility and self restraint.

Hoping that you understand what I am saying, I'd invite you to get to know Macclint just a wee bit better by visiting his website. It won't cost you anything but some free time and an open mind which I think you already have.

Codger :)

Well said Codger

Open minds and consideration go both ways. I never named names but expressed an observation from spending hours reading through the posts on this forum for the past month. I was ridiculed by those with longer time and more posts because they didn't like my pointing out that some people on this forum seem to think of the woods as their private playground.

It's a two-way street, codger. I've got no beefs with anyone and I happen to run a very large internet forum myself where I enforce strict rules of courtesy. But I won't take crap from people who think their time on a forum somehow makes them more knowledgeable or important. If spark doean't want that icon used, it should be removed and I'd have used the rolleyes one instead.

I'm not a troll and I'm not a treehugger but I notice a propensity of many young men to wave their, um, blades around and I've seen enough of that in my lifetime to last at least a couple more. ;)

BTW, I'm sure you can ask the owner of this forum to ban me if that's what you want. No skin off my nose.

No one has any intent or interest in banning you. And I see no need to have the icon removed as a forum option. I am not picking on you. Reread my post. I merely made a friendly suggestion to help keep the forum on an even keel, and a good place for all to visit including you, me, Macclint and everyone else.

ECOSYSTEM FRIENDLY SURVIVAL SHELTER TRAINING - THE TIME IS NOW !!!!

Yes thats right folks, every suburban area, like mine, undoubtly has between 3 and 4 christmas tree drop off areas. Right now (12 th day of chrismtas), everyone is busy tossing their used, but still green trees into the designated area.

What a great opportunity to load up the pick-up truck (your diesel/hybrid one of course) with 5-6 good sized trees and practice your shelter building in your own backyard! When all is done, bring the boughs back to the drop of area.

Come on guys, what do you say, lets make up, and take some photos of them X-christmas shelters. Extra points to the one with tinsel strands left over!!!!

ken :) :)

I don't bury.

When I lived in Georgia most of my time was spent in the woods and some times before I was wiped these cute beetles (dung beetles, AKA tumble turds) would fly up and commence to have a party on my waste. Would I dare deprive these critters from fulfilling there roll in life?

NEVER.

I must confess to pooping in the woods every once in a while especially when campling - but I do bury my creations. -kgd

Campling and pooping, eh...ridiculous.

btw-I almost campled a poop when I read this. LOL!

This sounds like an episode from Gary Larson's Far Side comics:

"Look scouts, those are campling scat! A good sign that the rare elusive camplers are nearby!"

Hey CSG, in your first posts on just about every thread that you post on start out great, respectful, and mindful of the environment. That is great and a plus here on BF:W&SS . But it seems that when one or more persons doesn't agree with you on one or more things you start firing up the iron horse and pulling out all the condescending remarks.

I am seemingly young in age compared to some on here, I am 21 which can be plainly seen in my public profile, but I have been in scouts since I was 6 years old, I earned my Eagle scout, and have always been good to the outdoors. Just because I am young, I don't take personal offense to your earlier post of "young and testosterone." Not everything said in here is directed at any individual except for the quarrel between you and Macclint.

Codger was merely trying to say to calm down a bit and read around before accusing people of things and talking down on them as if you know everything. In fact, that is the great thing about being human, we can never stop learning even up 'til the day we kick the bucket. I couldn't agree with you more with your second post on this thread, but after that it started to get off topic from the OP of Bushcraft as more than just a hobby.

Hope this doesn't upset or offend you, just trying to keep the peace, J.

Hobby is defined as something a person likes to do or study in his spare time.

I would love bushcraft to be more than a hobby but I am not independently wealthy.

Does it carry over into every aspect of me as a person YES! Hell, I make my own medicine for god's sake from plants harvested from the woods. Well that brings up the idea of conservation. I often pick a sample of a plant for trying out as a food source or a medicine source. I don't over forage but I do pick. This has happened in the past in a certain region of the US where a few plants were really sort after. They were over harvested and almost depleted the species.
