Wilderness & Survival Skills Extreme Build Off

Whaaaaaaat.... you heat it up and roll it like a newspaper, right? Just use thick gloves.;) Simple:p

Thanks, Brian. I've seen video of the socket handles being made in Southeast Asia where the smith was cranking 'em out as hard and fast as he could go,using the socket handle as a quick, cheap way to make a handle and not worrying about fit or comfort very much. I make 'em for strength, light weight, comfort, and niftiness factor, so I take a lot of time and care to get them shaped right. There's a fair amount of subtlety with the hammer, and I try to do as much as I can on the face of the anvil. I really only use a mandrel these days if I accidently overlap the seam and need to open it back up.

Rick - Hmmm, never thought of that. Why don't you give that a try and let me know how it goes? :D

Not so good...

Hmmmm, try it with some thicker gloves... :D

I think I'll stick with rolling mine with a hammer.

Got some aloe vera?

Thought I'd break the blunt-end chopper trend a little. Don't know whether it is more nessmuk-y or bolo-y Still have a lot of finish grinding and HT to do.

19.25" OAL - 12.25" cutting edge - 2 7/8" widest point - .21" CPM 3V

Brian - You're doing the testing on this challenge, right?

I started out wanting to make a blade.

I have the steel and it partially blanked.

Being that I started all of this ... calling out Rick ....

I should build a knife.

It probably is best that I do the testing though.

It isn't like other testing IMO.

There's more to it than just slicing , dicing and a F&F evaluation.

So, unless someone really wants to step up that everyone feel comfy with and test them ... I'll do it.

Putting aside the pain of the shipping back and forth ... being able to handle all of the killer blades you guys are making is more than worth it.

I'm new to this world and it's all fun so I hope this gives exposure to some good people that happen to make knives.

So maybe I'll send my blade to the winner.

One thing for sure, I'll beat em' like I stole em'!

Brian... I personally have no problem with you entering a blade, even if you are a tester. I have no reason to think you would be unfair in anyway.

Thanks Rick, I appreciate that.

As some of you know I've had some setbacks with family health issues that hit right when I started all of this.

I'm so glad that all of you have kept this alive.

Update, things have gotten better and I've been blessed on the home front.

Not only for my family but having some great friends on this forum.

I don't want to set a cut off date just yet.

The stuff you guys are making isn't like grinding out a necker so I know it takes time.

IMO the F&F is nice but the performance is going to score ten fold.

If there is a nick, scratch or whatever .... I'll never mention it.

There will be a huge fun factor when this all gets rolling.

So to everyone involved ... lets shoot for Mid June to start finishing these up. I'll send PM's to the ones on the list that we haven't heard from in a bit.

Ok, so you'll get to try out this one. :)

I am certainly interested in what kind of knife you make and seeing how it stacks up.

Mine's a little small compared to some of these but it's so big to me I've gotta wait till I make a bigger quench tank to heat treat it  Definitely fun making something like this! Should have it heat treated this weekend.

I like the blade shape, too. A little different than what I am used to seeing, which is a good thing.

The padlock and cinder block smashing really made me rethink what I was going to do originally, which would have been much more standard. I can't wait to see pics of the testing

Profile of mine is almost done and I'm running out of time!

11" blade, 17.5" oal, .25" thick 5160 from Aldo
