Wilderness & Survival Skills Extreme Build Off

I just want to comment on how much I appreciate you guy's making BIG, HEAVY choppers........as opposed to SMALL tiny kneckers. Let's do this again real soon and invite the whole knife making community :)

I'm liking the entries I'm seeing!

And Aldo, I know that your steel is in at least two entries in this little challenge. :)

So what if the only blade you made for the last 2 years was a chopper and you weren't in at the beginning of this thing? Can we still enter a knife?

Okay, the only knife I've been able to finish since I started the "Project". It's an 11" blade made with Aldo's 52100 (Been wanting to type that for the longest time :) ) and heat treated using the non-Fowler method.

Aldo... what if 2 or more blades of your steel clang together? Are we risking an event horizon that will endanger the universe as we know it?

My entry is with the L-6 you sent me.

Mine is Aldo's 3V as well. Got back from heat treat this week and hope to get handles on this weekend.
Here is a pic, this is actually a customers knife but the challenge knife is identical.

man I freaking love the choppers. you guys are coming up with some sick sick designs. I can't wait to see the testing. great job to all you makers.

Ooooh.... 3V... That is some competition steel... this is gonna be a tough ride.

Now.. I really can't wait to see this one pan out. Definitely looking forward to the testing on those bad boys.

Rick, I'm thinking that there's so much of it out there that it's bound to happen eventually. I guess we'll see! :)

Stanley, are you running a power hammer?

Nope.

Forever ago I was intrigued to see Joe Talmadge's "Knife Steel FAQ" describe L-6 as:

"A band saw steel that is very tough and holds an edge well, but rusts easily. It is, like O-1, a forgiving steel for the forger. If you're willing to put up with the maintenance, this may be one of the very best steels available for cutlery, especially where toughness is desired."

Despite the above description I don't see too many folks using L-6. Maybe my research is bad but Bruce Culberson and Mark Wohlwend seem to me to be the two regulars.

Overall I am simply excited to see a knife steel I have read about as being tough put against newer steels such as 3V.

I believe Koyote knives uses it too.

Nope.

I got to see and play with a new design this weekend -- and encouraged the maker to enter it here.
I'm seriously hoping he paid attention to my encouragement.
