Will there be a 2017 forum knife?

I do like a Barlow with micarta.

Light colored or blue denim micarta would look great.

Very nice. I personally prefer the darker micarta as it makes it easier to see the fabric weave in the substrate.

How about instead of having the Bladeforums distinction stamped on the blade like previous editions, we come up with a Bladeforums engraving for the bolster? Ya know, being a Barlow and all...

A stylized BF or BFC or something along that lines. Queen did that for the 2009 knife. That big bolster is nice blank canvas.

I believe Charlie already mentioned that it requires a substantial price increase to "tool" a new bolster die for that purpose. I agree it would have looked really sweet, though...

Working against larger production of one pattern, is the need of a small factory, here GEC, to make a variety of knives for its dealers. You have to be huge and wealthy to produce 50,000 knives of one pattern, and stock them against future orders. That would tie up 2 1/2 million dollars more or less!! And that's just one pattern. Imagine 25 patterns!

Thanks for clarifying the micartas for me Ryan!

Queen sent the knives out to have the bolsters lasered, planterz. A fairly expensive process also.

Definitely a cool idea but I don't think it would come out looking like the TC bolsters. IIRC, the "TC" is actually stamped into the bolsters while they're red hot, rather than engraved on. Apparently the stamping dies are quite pricey.

I kind of tuned this thread out for awhile as it seemed to be a somewhat touchy subject in the beginning. But I have been checking in now and then and now it would seem some rather interesting developments are in the works. I have not been around long enough to really know the effort and work involved to make a forum knife happen, though reading through this thread has provided some insight and it would seem that it is expensive, cumbersome, complicated, and potentially thankless.

That being said though, my hat goes off to you folks who have persevered and endured to make what seems to be a rather special knife and annual tradition happen year after year. I have the 2016 forum knife (thanks again fishcakes) and it has become one of my favorites, it accompanies me every day. Now that I know the work involved to make it exist, it is that much more meaningful to me. I know I have zero say or influence on the matter, but I would hate to see such a cool tradition fall by the wayside. Realistically speaking though, it seems we are at the mercy of the factories...

Being ever optimistic though (I pretend real good anyway), I am rather excited seeing where the conversation has led to. A Barlow has been a rather elusive, yet attractive target style for me and having the opportunity to own one of Charlie's, and a forum knife no less, is almost too good to be true. Being a fan of sheepsfoot blades and increasingly intrigued by lambsfoot variants, I am foreseeing a match made in the proverbial heavens. I will be paying a lot more close attention to the developments and process and will offer whatever support I can, meager as it may be.

Thank you to all those whose efforts in the past have resulted in great forum knives, hopefully it is a tradition that can continue.

I'm out this year. I certainly don't want to make any enemies here but I just don't approve of the business arrangement being made again this year. Have fun and enjoy your knives, I'm sure they'll be beauties.

Would it be unreasonable for me to ask what arrangements you disapprove of? Based on the info provided, it doesn't seem anything untoward is happening...

I think that the 2009 Forum Knife, Queen made Barlow has stamped bolsters with the date on it in Roman numerals. Canal Street certainly lasered their Barlows, and it looks like it...

Might be worth asking Gus/Spark if the Forum kept the bolster die stamp from this run ? It could perhaps be reworked.

However, a TC Barlow is a TC stamped Barlow and the Forum Knife has had the tang stamped with Bladeforums. Seems a simple solution.

Any news on the brass v steel liners yet?

Regards, Will

Micarta...check. Wharncliffe...check. TC...check. Now to use imagination to add the tang stamp and put it all together. Wait, am I missing anything else?

Agreed. We should vote between these two patterns:

Or maybe this one:

I just checked  the Harris tweed shop online for a look that encompasses a lighter tan colour.
I have always imagined tweed as the greeny moss coloured tartanny looking old bloke jacket that my grandfather wore with leather elbow patches .
At first I thought yuk in terms of knife scales.
Having seen whats available these days I am amazed.
Whilst there are some tweed patterns that would not be good for the appearance of micarta knife scales -the open pattern type tweed-
There are close weave and plain tweeds available in a great range of beautiful colours-natural looking including several shades of denim blue and sandy ,tan shades.
I'm feeling as though if this was the option we choose it would constitute a major part of the cost and production schedule of the knife -but hey! was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl harbour?
